With the end of a busy and challenging term comes the chance for rest and relaxation. Crisp autumn mornings and sunny days make this the perfect time to get outside and enjoy being active. Keeping active is a great way to boost our mental wellbeing. NSW Health recommends 1 hour of moderate to vigorous physical activity each day for 5-13 year olds, and at least 1 hour for 14-17 year olds.

This month’s theme from Action for Happiness is Active April. How many of these actions can your family try during the month?

With the holidays can also come the challenge of managing screen time. Screen time can be part of a healthy lifestyle when it’s balanced with other activities. NSW Health have shared the following tips for screen time reduction, which should be no more than 2 hours per day for 5-17 year olds.

  • No screens in bedrooms
  • No screens during meal times; make meal times social and eat together at the table. Stuck for things to talk about? Try these conversation starters
  • Alternate activities; keep other activities such as craft, games, toys and puzzles accessible so your child has more options for things to do
  • Break up and limit screen time; set a timer for 20-30 minutes, and give a 5 minute warning before time is up

Wishing you an enjoyable and relaxing holiday break.
