Mr Tim Jones, Junior School Sport Co-ordinator

NSW CIS Primary Swimming Championships

On 24 March, children from over 200 schools attended the NSW CIS Primary Swimming Championships held at the Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre and Kinross Wolaroi School sent a team of 11 competitors.

The day opened with the heats for the school relays. The 8-10 years girls' relay included Elizabeth Croft, Harriet King, Andie Zinga and Grace Lowther. The 11-13 years girls' relay included Zoe Strahorn, Georgie Simpson, Alexandra Karrasch and Charlotte Williams. After two great swims, both of the relay teams secured a spot in the finals.

The 50m freestyle events followed:

Marlon Zielinski  placed 18th in 9 years freestyle

Andie Zinga placed 18th in 10 years freestyle

Isabelle Provost placed 21st in 11 years freestyle

Charlotte Williams placed 20th in 12 years freestyle

Zoe Strahorn placed 16th in 12 years freestyle

Charlotte Williams then competed in the 12 years 50m breaststroke placing 14th.

The 100m freestyle timed finals followed with Charlotte Williams and Zoe Strahorn competing in the 12 years event. Charlotte finished strongly with a time of 1.13.44 seconds placing 15th, with Zoe posting a PB of 1.12.95 placing 12th.

The girls rushed to prepare for the relay finals. Both of the relay teams came 6th in their finals. An incredible result for a school our size.

The afternoon included the 50m backstroke. Thomas Karrasch posted a 4 sec PB to place 12th in the 8-10 years backstroke.  Charlotte Williams came 11th and Zoe Strahorn came 14th in the 12 years backstroke.

The final event for the day was the 50m butterfly. Grace Lowther swam beautifully in the 8-10 years butterfly and came 23rd. Charlotte Williams hammered home with a PB securing a place in the butterfly final and ultimately placing 10th overall in the final. A great result for arguably the toughest stroke after a long day of racing. Zoe Strahorn finished her last event, placing 20th overall in the 50m butterfly.

The Kinross Wolaroi team should be incredibly proud of their results. A big thank you to Theresa Armstrong, Junior Swim Coach, and Mr Tim Jones for coordinating the CIS team and working on the pool deck at the carnival. Thanks must also go to all of the parents supporting the our swimmers.

A message from the Junior Swim Coach

CIS Swimming Day 1

Please remember that in swimming every microsecond is a huge achievement! Dropping time is every swimmer’s dream when they step up on the blocks before a race. Unfortunately, once you achieve a top age level time, dropping those five seconds every time you race an event is long gone. It can literally take months, sometimes even years to shave off a tenth of a second in your best event. So lets celebrate every nanosecond.

Of the 17 personal best (PB’s) times achieved today there were two individual and all three relay teams that made ginormous PB’s stand out as incredible achievements among each and every phenomenal swim. Matthew Lowther’s 3:38.00 sec PB, Alexandra Karresch’s 3:20.00 sec PB, an individual PB within a relay team that also had a 4:47.00 second PB.

Day 2 of Junior State Championships

Life is a marathon, not a sprint.” In theory, it makes sense in terms of time – a marathon takes longer, and a sprint is very short – meaning when applied to life, great things take time so don't rush it.

This was the theme for the day, while a day for sprints for the swimmers the two days of early wakeups and all-day pool side has taken its toll.

Before I list the flat-out amazing achievements, I want to highlight Matthew and Chloe.

Matthew had 10 races over the two-day extravaganza, both individually and as a member of his relay team, not once did he back down or not give everything he had left in his tank.  His personal best achievements are simply jaw dropping. In the end He had to make a tough decision between a 50 m sprint or a 200m push (the races were one right after the other, going from the 50m free race to swimming in the first heat of the 200m back. Matthew chose to give everything he had to attempt his first ever sub 30 PB in his free and did just this, at the cost of his endurance at the end of the two-day race schedule. He was disappointed but satisfied with his achievement as well. Well Done Matt.

Chloe, at 12 yrs is swimming the times of the senior group, and a critical thinker who watches everything. She also swam in both of her relays before pushing out for her own individual race. Proving her PB at country wasn’t a fluke, Cloe’s sub 30 time brought her relay team to a top ten ranking and also took its toll in her individual event.

Please help me congratulate them as well as all of our junior competitors.
