Co-curricular Dance – Term 2

I am very excited to announce that our co-curricular dance ensembles will be returning in Term 2 under the supervision of Ms Georgia Cuming. Ms Cuming currently teaches Kindergarten and has a passion for dance with a wide range of dance experience, specifically in contemporary, jazz and musical theatre. While a student at school, Ms Cuming participated in musicals, co-curricular and competed in many eisteddfods.

This dance program is targeted towards students who have beginning experience with dance but would like to develop basic technique across musical theatre, contemporary, jazz and modern styles. Ms Cuming is excited for the opportunity to take these classes and will be focusing on expanding fitness levels, spatial awareness, and developing students’ confidence and ability to move appropriately to different genres of music whilst having lots of fun along the way.

What to wear

Students should wear their sports uniform but will dance in bare feet. Students in Upbeats will be permitted to wear their sport uniform to school and then change into their normal uniform at recess.

Students may be required to purchase a costume for some of our performances. Costumes will be sourced by the teacher and the total will be added to the student account. This is usually around $30.

Rehearsals

Rehearsals will begin in Week 1 for Upbeats and Week 2 for Jitterbugs and will continue to Week 9. Please note there will be no rehearsal for Jitterbugs in Week 9 due to the long weekend.

Vocal Workshop

At the end of last month, Koristers were lucky enough to participate in a workshop with Australian singer, Andrew O’Connor which everyone enjoyed tremendously. Not only did Andrew share lots of singing tips and techniques, but they learned a fun new warm up, tried some ‘overtone’ singing and sight sang a beautiful song by Australian composer Dan Walker about the wide open plains of Western NSW (made famous in the 2015 documentary called Wide Open Sky). This was a fantastic experience for our young singers who all took a new skill away from the workshop. We look forward to hearing them perform next term at our JS and SS Performing Arts concerts.

AMEB Examinations 2022

Enrolments for AMEB exams are due by Friday 6 May. Please speak with your instrumental teacher to find out whether you need to enrol your child for an AMEB instrumental exam. Exams will be held onsite at School, with exact dates to be confirmed closer to the date. Central West NSW dates are expected to be held between July 11 2022 and August 10 2022.

AMEB Exams are a great way to encourage your child’s musical development by creating a tangible goal to work towards each year. Exams are also an excellent performance opportunity that recognises a students’ progression and achievement through structured grades.

Should you have any queries regarding AMEB examinations for your child, don’t hesitate to contact Sharon Martin, Music Administrator at performingarts@kws.nsw.edu.au or Katherine Howarth, Instrumental Music Coordinator at kahowarth@kws.nsw.edu.au
