On Friday 25th March, our Vice Captains (Chloe Curran and Tristan Neaves) and Year 10 Student Leaders (Meagan Webster and Kasey Svenson) attended the launch of the inaugural Gippsland Student Leadership Network (GSLN). Held at Federation University in Churchill, Chloe, Tristan, Meagan and Kasey met like-minded students from other Gippsland schools and were inspired by guest speaker Kerryn Vaughan to create a project that will give back to the community.

Over the next 7 months, these students will meet with their team and with mentors from the Gippsland Community Leadership alumni to further develop and undertake their community projects, which are based on the themes of Mental Health and Climate Change.

On the 24th of March our Leadership Team ran the school’s first ever joint year level Learning to Learn class about Diversity and Mental Health. We created a power point and lesson plan and had our brave Student Leadership Team co-run the classes with the allocated teacher. I walked around to all the classes and took photos of the activities taking place. In my travels around the school. I saw great teamwork and discussion happening amongst different year levels in the classes. Discussions around mental health and diversity are commonly avoided in a lot of aspects in a young person’s life so we want to help teach students that it isn’t a scary topic and instead young people should feel safe talking about.
