In 2022, Mark Lomas from the Education Support team has joined MSC’s Careers Team.  Mark has been working with the Senior Team in 2021 as the VET administrative officer, and will be working towards a Certificate IV in Career Development later in 2022.  Mark Lomas works with the College’s qualified Careers Practitioner Marie Clark, to provide support, guidance and advice for all students around pathways, planning for the future, work placement, work experience, and transition from school into further education or the workforce.  Mark works Monday-Thursday.  We also have Aaron Patten with us on Wednesdays; Aaron works for the Department of Education’s HeadStart program, which supports those students who are taking on school-based apprenticeships or traineeships.  HeadStart is a great way to start a trade career while continuing education and completing a senior secondary certificate.

The Careers Team are an important part of supporting students through their schooling, particularly as they move into the senior end of the school.  We provide a broad range of services, including helping students apply for part-time or casual work, help with resume writing, job interview practice, pathways advice, liaising with employers or community groups, preparing for TAFE or University, scholarship applications, applying for traineeships or apprenticeships, and finding work placement.  We also support students to consider their own skills, interests and passions, and how these will translate into their future pathway beyond Secondary Schooling.  Each year every student from Years 9-12 has an individual meeting with a Careers Practitioner to discuss their current academic program, their subjects, their progress, their future pathway, and how to meet their goals moving forward.  We work closely with teaching staff to ensure students meet the educational goals needed to support their chosen pathway.

If students would like to arrange a meeting with Mark, Marie or Aaron, they can call into the Careers office (located in the Senior School) or via email:

Careers in the Defence Force – Information Session

Recently we had two staff members from the Australian Defence Force visit the school to run an information session for those students in years 10-12 who may be considering a career in the Navy, Army or Air Force.  They discussed trades in the ADF, non-officer and officer entry, and how to apply to the Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA).  There are options for students who have completed both VCE and VCAL.  For more information please contact Mark Lomas.

Monash University Clayton Campus – Excursion

In week 7, Year 11 and 12 VCE students took a long-awaited trip to visit the Clayton Campus of Monash University.  This was a fantastic opportunity for students to gain an understanding of what Uni is like and what some of the options are for tertiary study at Monash.  University staff took us on a tour of the campus and provided valuable information about living on campus, VTAC applications and courses on offer.  We had a great day out and it was all the more enjoyable given it has been cancelled for the last two years due to COVID!

All Year 12 VCE students will be provided with individual support to complete their VTAC application in September with Careers staff.  We can’t wait to see what further study our students decide to pursue after they complete VCE.
