Grade 5 - 6

We have made it to the end of our first term!  We are so proud of all the students in Years 5 and 6.  They have worked really hard this term and completed some wonderful work!

Writing

Students finished the term off strongly with their second narrative writing task - a realistic fiction story. After planning and writing their first drafts, they spent time learning about the craft of writing narratives. Students worked on improving their characters, settings, problems and solutions using many different writing techniques.

Once the students had completed revising their stories, they had the almighty task of putting all of their adjusted and improved pieces of writing together to form their final copy. Some of the cohort published their pieces using google classroom whilst others used their neatest handwriting to publish. They were extremely proud of their work  - as were their teachers!

Check out a couple of our stories (the beginnings at least….)

Inquiry – Volunteer Groups in Australia.

This term we have been studying Civics and Citizenship. We have looked at the values that underpin Australia’s democracy and the importance of the electoral process. To end the term, we examined various ways people can participate effectively in groups to achieve shared goals.  Students were split into small groups and given the task to choose a volunteer group within Australia. As a cohort we brainstormed what a volunteer group is and the many different groups within our local community. They then chose a volunteer group to learn more about.

We had many volunteer groups covered throughout the Inquiry cycle, SES, CFA, Red Cross, Run 4 the Kids, Team Sea, Red Dust, Seeing Eye Dogs Australia, Sikh Food Deliveries, Jump Rope for Heart, Cathy Freeman Foundation, Second Bite and Clean Up Australia Day. The students spent the first week of Inquiry investigating what the volunteer groups do, why they were formed, who they help within the community, how they are funded and how they attract new volunteers.

Once the research was completed the students worked in their small groups to begin their presentations. They were so creative with their findings - we had posters, games, interactive displays, trioramas and many more! After the presentations were completed the students reflected on what they had accomplished, what they would choose to do differently next time and how they had demonstrated our school values.
