Introducing Chris Neale

Joining Endeavour in 2019 is drum teacher Chris Neale.

An Honours graduate of the Elder Conservatorium, Chris has shared the stage with a plethora of Australian and international artists including James Morrison, James Muller, Hugh Sheridan, Rachael Beck, Brian D’Arcy James, Laura Fygi, and The Callaway Sisters.

In 2014, Chris successfully auditioned and travelled to New York City as part of NYU’s Summer Broadway Percussion Seminar. Working under the guidance of NYU Percussion Professor Jonathan Haas, Chris was given the opportunity to study with an eclectic mix of drummers, percussionists, and industry professionals who form the backbone of the Broadway scene.

In addition to holding down regular performances with some of Adelaide’s most celebrated musicians and bands (The Cast, All About Her, The Baker Boys Band), Chris is frequently in demand for Adelaide’s Fringe and Cabaret Festivals, and last year completed a 4 month European and North-American tour with Australian circus company, Gravity and Other Myths.

Big Ideas Club

On Tuesday 2 March, members of the Big Ideas Club visited a new exhibition at UniSA's Museum Of Discovery (MOD) called ‘Waging Peace'. This innovative centre is a future focused museum which provokes ideas at the intersection of art, science and innovation. A fantastic and thought-provoking day.  Read on to hear firsthand accounts from students in Year 9 who participated.

On Tuesday the Big Ideas Club went to the MOD museum. The MOD museum was very entertaining, everyone loved all the different rooms with new technology. The universe room, consisted of large touch screens on which you could see star signs, planets and much more. The room also had a large globe shape, that could turn into any planet at a touch of a button. This museum also had a 7-minute film, that was about equality. It was very eye opening. Overall the MOD museum was amazing and provided a fun and exciting day for the all of us.  Alana

The theme at the MOD was ‘waging peace’. The exhibit that I found the most interesting was the ‘games for peace’ section where technology developers had made games that encourage peace and positive emotions such as empathy and understanding. We got to spend some time playing those games on iPads. I found this interesting because many modern games are centred around violence, and it would be interesting to see how much of a difference these games would make to society.  Ashleigh

As soon as we entered the building, we knew that this excursion would be exciting and interesting for all of us. The first room really got us thinking about punishment and wars around the world. The second room was my personal favourite using technology and visuals to teach us about our galaxy and planets. Each room we went to taught us something new and got our brains thinking. This experience was truly once in a lifetime and we all really enjoyed our time at the MOD.  Ayden

Outdoor Education Camp

On Monday 1 April, 24 students along with Miss Facchin and Mr Otto-Williams set off on a three day camping expedition to Kuitpo Forrest. Over the three days, students were challenged out of their comfort zones and pushed to their limits during rock climbing, abseiling, orienteering, mountain biking and surfing activities.

This camp provided students the opportunity to prepare and cook their own meals on Trangia cooking stoves, assemble and sleep in a tent and demonstrate leadership roles amongst the group. Teamwork, perseverance and courage were the strong themes demonstrated throughout the expedition, making it a rewarding and enjoyable experience for all.

Outdoor Education camp was an experience to remember forever! The camp taught me survival skills and how to cook on a Trangia which was a rewarding experience. Outdoor Education is a MUST for all people who love the outdoors and a challenge. Jackson Bussenschutt.

My favourite activity on the Outdoor Ed Camp was the mountain biking because it was something that I have never done before. During mountain biking, we learnt how to properly ride over logs and navigate along narrow trails without falling over. Overall it was a great experience and I would definitely do it again. Samuel Gourlay.

Surfing was my personal favourite activity as I haven’t really done it before. Our class had great teamwork, leadership and encouragement over the whole camp which allowed us as a group to feel like were well supported. I definitely would go on another camp like this . Jai Bown.

Experiencing Live Theatre

The Drama Department has explored new and interesting theatre throughout Term 1. The Senior Drama and English classes saw George Orwell’s Animal Farm, the tale of farm animals revolting against their farmer to create their own fair society which perhaps is not as fair as they once thought. Adapted by Geordie Brookman, this novel is transformed into a compelling one man show which can capture these characters through actor Renato Musolino’s performance and storytelling ability.

The Senior and Year 10 Drama Classes also saw David Williamson’s The Club, an Australian story of a failing men’s football club, and the ways in which the players, coach and club president along with other board members try to keep the team afloat. Reinvented by Tessa Leong, three actresses bring to life all the men within The Club and bring this 1977 story to the modern audience.

Allowing students of Drama to experience theatre in all forms enables the ability to understand and analyse the ways in which professional theatre utilises actors, set, costume, lighting, sound and more. Understanding the use of these areas and the effect they have on an audience caters for the exploration of new ways in which students can use these areas in productions or in theoretical work. As young students, it has been a privilege to witness such iconic properties that have not only been introduced to us but also reimagined and reinterpreted in such creative and innovative ways, as we continually strive to do in the Drama Department.
