Our school captains will be announced in Week 3 with nominated students giving their speeches in Week 2 in the whole school assembly.

Year 10 Mission Trip: Yarrabah & Palm Island (16 - 27 September)

One of the highlights each year at Heatherton is our Year 10 Missions trip where our students say goodbye to their parents for twelve days in sunny Queensland, only it’s no vacation. Rather, the students embark on a powerful Christ-filled and outward focused adventure of a lifetime.

We spent the first five days at Townsville’s YWAM (Youth with a Mission) base where we learnt about cross-culture evangelising, the aboriginal culture and the history of how they were treated when the Europeans came to settle in this country. Mixed amongst all the powerful learning was also plenty of fun, from downtime chilling with friends, messy games by the beach, making friends with students from all over the world and tons of other activities. This all became preparation for the remaining days and ultimately why they had traveled so far.

On Saturday 21 September our close knit group of Year 10 students split into two separate groups. One hopped aboard a ferry and headed to Palm Island to hang with and minister to the aboriginal community. The other group planned to head to an aboriginal community in Yarrabah, a township slightly northeast of Cairns, only for the Yarrabah crew, their plans got a little shaken up. Their main contact within the community could no longer be there for the whole week, so the Yarrabah crew only got a small taste of this aboriginal community and then set off to share God's love in other surrounding areas around Cairns and the Atherton Tablelands.

During these last days, we saw our students taking steps of faith, walking courageously and truly experiencing the rewards that follow. Each student returned home with a plenty of memories that will remind them of how great it is to sow into other people’s lives.

Grade 3/4 Hooptime

On Friday, 13 September, the Grade 3 and 4 students participated in Hoop Time. A fun time was had by all and our school achieved excellent results, with the Rookies team winning all their games and the Future Stars reaching the semi-finals. Our students also exhibited great sportsmanship, which didn’t go unnoticed by the event organisers and spectators.

Grade 5 and 6 Aquatics Program

On Tuesday 8 October, the Grade 5 and 6 students went to the Waves Leisure Centre for their first lesson of the HCC Aquatic Program. This Primary school swimming program will continue for 8 lessons and finish on Thursday 17 October.

Prep Native Animals Incursion

Our Integrated topic this term is 'Great and Small'. The students are going to be learning about the features of different animals and their habitats.

The incursion (Tuesday 8 October) was for them to learn about some native animals. The incursion presenter, Lauren, talked about their features and habitats in the wild e.g how they would protect themselves from predators).

The children got to touch and hold: snakes, lizards, a possum, a barn owl, a crocodile and a frog. It was fantastic!

Footy Colours Day

On the last day of Term 3, Friday 20 September, all HCC students and staff came dressed in their favourite team colours - AFL, ARL, or A-league / EPL to celebrate HCC Footy Colours Day. It was a fun way to end the term. We collected an optional gold coin donation and forwarded the money towards Destiny Rescue, the charity that we support.

Physical Education Equipment

It is that time of the year that we ask whether parents could please check around your homes for any equipment items (either sports gear or uniforms) which belong to the College and have them returned to school, please. We have had a very big year in terms of sports teams, excursions and the occasional borrowing of equipment and would like to conduct a full stocktake to prepare for 2020.

Fitness Equipment Donations

To support our units of work in fitness, we are requesting any exercise gear which parents may know of which could be useful here at the College. Items of need include exercise bikes, rowing machines, boxing gloves and focus pads as well as any weight training gear such as barbells, weight plates, kettlebells and medicine balls.

Coaching Support

We also want to acknowledge and thank the many parents and volunteers who have supported the Physical Education and Sport program with their time, energy and expertise. Major contributors to the program in recent weeks have included Mrs Dina Man, Mr Mike Rathbone, Miss Suz Sinclair, Mrs Alison Hart, Mrs Abby Awad, Mr Corey Diamond and Mr Liam Reaper. The external help of these individuals and many others have driven the College's ongoing improvement in Physical Education and Sport.

Working Bee Saturday 12 October

Our fourth working bee for the year is being held on Saturday 12 October from 9:00am – 11:30am.

The working bee is primarily for families with surnames beginning L-Z, however you are welcome to attend if you are a family with a surname from A-K and you were not able to make it in Term 3. There is one working bee scheduled per term and families are encouraged to attend two for the year. You will receive a credit of $75 towards your school fees for each working bee you attend, $150 credit if you attend two over the year.

Please park at the western end of the carpark (near the Telstra building) and meet just outside the staff room to sign in and be assigned a job from the list published there.

We usually break the work up with a morning tea, so there is time to chat and mingle with the other parents. Please bring a plate of morning tea to share and leave it on the staffroom table when you arrive.

Working bees are a great way to meet other parents and at the same time put something back into the College. The types of jobs undertaken may include gardening, cleaning, painting and general maintenance.

We do request that people bring their own equipment if possible. Of particular use are whippersnippers, wheelbarrows, rakes, garden forks (great for moving mulch), spades and household cleaning items. It is highly likely that you will get dirty, so please wear old clothing.

Dishan Rajaratnam will be coordinating this working bee. The working bee will go ahead rain, hail or shine, we look forward to seeing you there.

HCC 21st Birthday Celebrations: 21 & 26 October

Heatherton Christian College began in 1999 and therefore is in its 21st year of existence! We would love to celebrate this momentous occasion to give honour and glory to God for His blessings to us as a college.

There are 2 events planned to celebrate this occasion - one for HCC’s current students and community and one for past students and staff.

Current Students and Community

The event for our current students and community will be in the form of an extended whole school morning assembly on Monday 21 October. Together we will celebrate all that God has done for us as a college.

Past Students and Staff

The celebration with past students and staff will be happening on the afternoon of Saturday 26 October from 3:30pm to 5:30pm. The event will include afternoon tea, video displays of past events, school tours, guest speakers and plenty of time for catching up with people. This event is also a great opportunity for people to reconnect and renew relationships built during their time here at HCC. We strongly encourage past students to make use of this opportunity to arrange for year level reunions after the official timeslot.

We do have so much to be thankful for – there are so many stories over these 21 years of children’s, families’ and staff’s lives being changed and touched through God and through the dedicated work of our staff. The culture of our college, the programs (both curricular and extracurricular) and the experiences provided here have enriched so many lives, the full extent of which we will only truly see when we get to Heaven. I know that I am really looking forward to a time of reconnecting and plenty of reminiscing, and we encourage everyone to set this date aside to join us.

After School Coding Club

Junior Engineers Micro:bits program is a wonderful entry into the world of coding, robotics and mechatronics.

Micro:bits are pocket-sized, codeable computers.

Your kids will learn to code their Micro:bits with motion detection, a compass, LED display and mini games.

Our instructors teach students how to code their Micro:bits with fun and engaging digital projects such as a heart rate monitor, a tug of war game, a message sharing service, a text and emoji display screen, colour displays, music, games and more!
