Food & Fibre Careers Event

On Friday 24th May, our students will get the opportunity to explore a wide range of careers at the annual Food & Fibre Careers event at Dookie College. It’s a ‘hands on’ event to give new experiences and information to students across all kinds of Agriculture, Viticulture, Horticulture, Bee keeping, Equine, Water, Genetics and careers across all related areas. Forms can be collected from Ms Drinnan in the JSC but need to be returned ASAP.

GV Health Careers Event

On Thursday 30th May, our students have the opportunity to explore a wide range of careers at the annual Rural Health Careers event at GV Health and The University of Melbourne’s Graham St Shepparton campus. It’s a ‘hands on’ event to give new experiences and information to students across all kinds of Health areas including: mental health, nursing, aged care, dentistry & oral health, midwifery, paramedicine, physiotherapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy and dietetics. Forms are available from Mr Crosbie.

Skills shortage area: Oral health

Are you interested in health and science? Have you thought about dentistry but concerned you won’t receive the required ATAR? You may be interested in exploring the following occupations:

Dental Nurse/Assistant: assists dental team, supports patient, sterilisation of equipment, prepares dental materials, maintains client records etc.
Dental Hygienist: educates patients about prevention of disease, treats oral diseases, and provides dental treatments.
Dental Therapist: examines and treats diseases of the teeth in children and adolescents under the supervision of dentists.
Dental Technician: designs and constructs dentures, crowns, impression trays, oral splints etc.

VCAL Work Placement

By the nature of the course, experience in work is a critical component of VCAL. As such, two periods of time are set aside each year for VCAL students to be able to participate in structured workplace learning (SWL), it’s sort of like work experience but with higher expectations of the skills and abilities the student might use in the workplace. This semester, work placement for VCAL students is from June 3rd to June 14th (inclusive). In some instances, permission is given for students to undertake these at alternate times (like school holidays) but this needs to be confirmed with their teacher and House Leader. None the less, all Yr 11 & 12 students by now should already have confirmed these. Should that not be the case with your child, action needs to be taken now. The SWL portal is a great resource for finding placements. Employers post on this.

Work or volunteer overseas after school

Thinking of taking a year off after school to volunteer overseas? There are hundreds of gap year companies and programs. To make sure you choose the right company:

Compare costs between the companies - some will offer similar services and opportunities for lower costs.
Ensure you and your family will have access to 24-hour telephone support during your placement (volunteering).
Ask if you can email people who have participated in the programs so you can gain an independent opinion.
Ask the company if they will run an information session at your school or where you live.
Make a list of what the expenses cover (e.g., meals, accommodation, flights, VISA).
