EXCEL Sports Program

Year EXCEL Sports Sailing

On Thursday 28th February, the EXCEL Sports class went to Mornington Yacht Club to experience sailing. For most students this was the first time they had learnt the technical skill and with favorable conditions for beginner’s, meant some students saw success instantly. The girls sailed in the morning and grasped the skills quickly, enjoying the friendly conditions to maneuver the boats. As the wind picked up, so did the swell causing the boys a bit of grief in the afternoon. With capsizes, water filled boats and flapping sails it was nice to see the students leave the beach content with their efforts and a smile on their face. Thank you again to the Mornington Yacht club who provided great learning conditions for the students to succeed and supplying a very yummy lunch.

Year 8 Beach Volleyball Schools Cup

The Year 8 EXCEL Sport class competed in the Beach Schools Cup at Port Melbourne Beach on Wednesday 13th March. Patterson River Secondary College entered three girls’ teams and three boys’ teams in the event. All teams competed in pool groups to win the right to progress to the final stages of the competition. After the preliminary rounds, one of our boys’ teams made it through to the quarter-finals, where they competed against Kew High School. Unfortunately, we were unable to close out the match but the team represented Patterson River Secondary College well. A special mention to Mr. Hayes for assisting us throughout the event.

Intermediate Girls Cricket

The Girls Intermediate Cricket team played in the Division Competition backing up from a successful 2018 campaign. There were three teams entered at Ballam Park on Friday 8th March. Patterson River played Mt Erin and then EMC. Both games were convincing wins over 100 runs with an even contribution from the whole team. I look forward to progressing to the Regional finals in term four.

Year 9 assist Primary School Athletics Carnivals

On Tuesday 12th March and Friday 16th March, the Year 9 EXCEL Sport class was invited to attend and assist at the Carrum Primary School and Seaford North Primary School Athletics Carnivals. All of the students were divided into small groups, and then given an event to either marshal, record or measure. It was a fantastic opportunity for our students to show case our program in the community and demonstrate the students’ ability to coordinate and supervise a sporting event. I was extremely proud of the maturity and responsibility displayed by the students throughout the two days. The Carrum Primary School and Seaford North Primary School communities were highly complimentary of our program and grateful for the assistance. Well done Year 9s.

It was an outstanding day with the school being represented with distinction in the community by our EXCEL Sport students and their families. Congratulations to Lachlan Osborne, Seth Furborough and Brodie Edwards for finishing 1st, 2nd and 3rd respectively in our class for the boys, and Piper Isles, Mikayla Sinclair and Kasey Smith for finishing 1st, 2nd and 3rd respectively in our class for the girls. On Thursday 14th March the Year 10 EXCEL Sport class competed in their first Beach Volleyball Schools Cup competition. Patterson River Secondary College entered 6 teams. After the preliminary rounds we had one of our boys and girls team make it through to the semi-finals of the competition. The boys team of Sam Ridgway, Zac Rowell, Taz Schreck and Joel Burton won the first set in a best of three set game and narrowly lost the second. After being 4-0 up in the decider, the boys were over-run by the eventual winners of the boys’ competition Rowville Secondary College. The girls team played a semi-final match against Braybrook College and won easily in straight sets. The grand final was played against Rowville Secondary College and it gives me great pleasure to announce the Gold Medal winners were Emily Terlicher, Madeleine Terlicher, Madison Evans and Alexandra Mason. Well done girls.

2019 Touch Football Championships

On Tuesday 19th March, the Year 7 and Year 9 EXCEL Sport students competed in the Year 7 and Under 15 Girls and Boys Touch Football Championships at Greaves Reserve, Dandenong. Patterson River Secondary College entered one team in each age group. The format of the championships was a round robin with the highest placed team at the end of the tournament being declared the winner. The boys and girls Under 15 team and the Year 7 girls team all had a narrow loss which cost them on the final ladder and finished second in all of their respective pools. The boys Year 7 team played four games throughout the day and only grew from strength to strength throughout the competition. They finished undefeated and were crowned the Year 7 Boys Touch Football Championship winners. A fantastic effort in their first EXCEL Sport competition. Thank you to Ms Robbins and Mr Andriessen for assisting and supporting us throughout the day.
