Literacy Assessments

Recently, students from Year 1 to Year 6 completed a Progressive Achievement Test (PAT) in reading.

PAT Reading Adaptive assesses students’ reading comprehension skills (retrieving directly stated information, interpreting explicit information, interpreting implied information and reflecting on texts) and vocabulary knowledge (word knowledge through synonyms).

The assessment is presented online in a multiple-choice format and creates personalised test pathways determined by student responses, giving a precise picture of student achievement.

PAT Reading Adaptive focuses on assessing and monitoring student growth over time. It is underpinned by an understanding that students of the same age and in the same school year can be at very different points in their learning and development. It describes the types of literacy skills a student has mastered and those still to be developed based on test performance.

Other recent class-based literacy assessments from Prep to Year 6 include reading (including decoding, fluency and comprehension) and spelling. These ongoing assessments are used to assist in planning effective and targeted literacy learning to advance the progress of every student, regardless of their starting point.
