INTERSCHOOL SPORTS ARE BACK

During 2022, interschool sports came back in a big way! Interschool sports provide the opportunity for students to show excellence in their sporting abilities in both individual and team events.

Interschool sport gives students opportunities to participate in their chosen discipline while allowing them to learn important life skills outside of the classroom. Over the course of the year, we have seen and celebrated many sporting achievements from our students. In fact, many students and teams competed and displayed their sporting knowledge and skills not only in Sunraysia but also at the regional and state level competitions.

With pride, I can say that every one of our students takes to the court/field/track/pool and displays their best efforts and abilities while demonstrating the college's Core Values. There is nothing like receiving compliments from referees, other schools, teams, and community members about the character and respect shown by our students in this arena.

The achievements of many students are far and wide, and I would like to congratulate everyone who has represented themselves, their teachers/coaches, and the college during interschool competitions. We are proud of our student's achievements. I would also like to thank the teachers and coaches who give their extra time and effort to our interschool sports program by arranging team selections, training sessions, team meetings, and at times travelling with teams to competitions all over the state. Without this assistance, our students would not have the opportunities to strive in their chosen sport. Well done to everyone involved, and GO, SJC!

SSVS TABLE TENNIS

Pasquale De Maria, Leo Nicholson, Arnold McCoy, and Jett Johnson represented the college at the SSVS Table Tennis Competition held at the Irymple Leisure Centre.

The boys acquitted themselves well and had early success in defeating Chaffey Secondary College 5-1 and then conquered Henderson Secondary College 6–0. Their final match against Trinity Lutheran College proved to be a far tougher assignment. Although beaten 1–5, the games were close and well fought out.

Jett Johnson was a standout player throughout the day, winning all singles matches (MVP), and Leo Nicholson made sure the team were well organised during the day (McAuley Award).

Well done to our team, who displayed exemplary behaviour and sportsmanship – even when defeated in their final match.

INTRODUCTION TO OUTDOOR EDUCATION

Introduction to Outdoor Education Camp was held Thursday and Friday October 27 and 28, at Hattah National Park. After preparing, training and learning about all things Outdoor Education, students were very keen to go on a camp and put their learning into practice.

Students started their day-long expedition at Hattah Store. They hiked into Lake Mournpall Camp Grounds, carrying all their gear in their backpacks and taking turns to use a map and compass to navigate the route. Students in this group had excellent navigation skills and arrived at the camp grounds in record time as a result.

After some downtime, students set up their tents and bedding, went for a short stroll around the area in search of scarred trees, and finally cooked dinner on a Trangia Camp Stove. The evening was spent around the campfire, playing games, enjoying each other's company and discussing the day.

Day two had everyone up for breakfast and then into their canoes with their partners for the morning's paddle around Lake Mournpal. We saw wallabies, ducks, and whistling kites and noted the higher water levels resulting from the floods.

When we returned to the campsite, we had a guest speaker: David Wood,Program Manager of 'The Living Murray'. David spoke to us all about the floods, black water, and the health of the Hattah waterways. He also discussed the history of Hattah, the Murray River and flooding. After David's very informative talk, it was time to pack up and head for home.

A huge thank-you to Mrs Lisa Miller for coming along. She was an asset who assisted us all on our camp. Lastly, huge congratulations to all students for their amazing efforts on this highly successful Outdoor Ed Camp.
