YEAR 7 CAMP - VICTOR HARBOR

In the last week of Term 3, our Year 7 students travelled to the Adare Camp in Victor Harbor. This being our first camp, there were a lot of unknowns. We were expecting great weather for the first two days (which we had), followed by rain for the remaining three days. Fortunately, apart from a brief thunderstorm one afternoon and persistent rain on the last day – the weather was great.

The students had an amazing experience participating in a number of activities: body boarding, mountain bike riding, kayaking, raft building, beach games, and walking around Granite Island. The highlights were the Flying Kiwi and Big Duck Boat Tour. It was great to see students mingling with students that they would not normally spend time with and building positive relationships with each other.

Thank you to the staff who attended the camp – Mark Avery, Danielle Duscher, Father Matthew Thomas, Sam Doering, Ben Tallent, Jennifer Gibson, Katelin Anderson, Erin Jansen, Sophie Law, Louise Clohesy, Rebecca Dea, John Fleming, Kimberly Cody and Anne Shipsides. We hope the relationships built with the staff and students over the camp translate to positive relationships with staff in the classroom. While camp experiences are great for the students in terms of building a sense of belonging and connectedness to the college and with each other, they simply can’t happen without staff who are willing to go above and beyond.

YEAR 9 CAMP - CENTRAL AUSTRALIA

A massive thank-you to the staff who attended the Year 9 Central Australia Camp – Father Matthew Thomas, Dion Collins, Jodie Noblet, Jennifer Gibson and Sam De Luca. We were also very fortunate to have the support of Chloe Stephens, Chloe Christensen, Nikki Andriske and Joel McClelland. We also had two Year 12 VCAL students, Molly Heeps and Lakaylia Pettit, who gave up their school holidays to support the Year 9 students on their outback camp experience.

The 72 students who attended the camp had many memorable experiences – perhaps once in a lifetime for many of them. Highlights of the camp included visiting Uluru, Kata Tjuta (The Olgas), hiking Kings Canyon, looking for opals in Coober Pedy, visiting the Alice Springs Desert Park, the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) visitor centre, Bounce in Adelaide and some last day shopping at Harbour Town.

The students quickly adapted to sleeping in tents and also enjoyed the two nights sleeping underground at Coober Pedy. The camp gave students the opportunity not only to see new things but also to build stronger relationships with their peers and the staff. Many students were taken out of their comfort zones, whether that be hiking 6km around a canyon, setting up and packing up tents, or even cleaning their own dishes and washing their clothes. It will be an experience that the students will remember fondly for many years to come.

The students were also able to fundraise and donated $1115.15 to the RFDS. Fundraising was primarily through the ‘canteen’ overseen by Dion, Molly and Lakaylia.

The coach drivers, Darren, Ken and John were fantastic, and the food was outstanding – big thanks to Billy and Cath.

We have great confidence that these outstanding young men and women will lead with pride and enthusiasm. The 2023 Year 11 students will attend a Leadership Seminar on Tuesday November 15. The students will hear from Independent MP for Mildura, Ms Ali Cupper, and the Mayor of Mildura, Cr Liam Wood. It will be an excellent opportunity for the students to listen to their leadership journeys, and also hear about their passion for the Sunraysia community.

UNIFORM

A reminder that, as we move towards summer and the weather heats up, the college hat needs to be worn when students are outdoors.

A friendly reminder of the following uniform expectations:

The college summer dress must be at or below the knee.
Hair must be tied back off the face with discreet hair accessories in the college colours: navy, white, red or maroon.
The college socks must be worn: white with purple stripes for the girls and grey with purple stripes for the boys.
Students are required to use the college bag.
Only one sleeper or stud is permitted in each lower ear lobe. No plastic, gemstones (coloured or clear), pearl, hoop, huggie or disc earrings. Clear plastic plugs or Band-Aid coverings are not acceptable. One chain with a religious symbol may be worn (no other visible chains, cords or necklaces). No rings, wrist or ankle adornments, such as bangles, bracelets or anklets. A wristwatch is allowed.
Coloured nail polish/nail extensions are not to be worn.

Please also remember that students must wear the college blazer to the upcoming Remembrance Day assembly and End of Year Mass.

EXAMS AND END OF YEAR ARRANGEMENTS

Finally, we wish our Year 12, 11, 10 and 9 students all the best as they work through their respective exam periods. Our graduating Year 12 students will transition to the next stage of their young adult lives, while the 2023 Year 12 students will move into their Headstart program, and our 2023 Year 11 students will head down to Melbourne for NOVUS.

The Year 7 and 8 students will participate in respective transition programs as we will also welcome our 2023 Year 7 students for their Orientation Day.
