Respectful Relationships

Following a number of family violence related deaths in Victoria in 2015, Australia’s first Royal Commission into Family Violence was completed. The Commission made recommendations to reduce the impact of family violence in our community, and this led to the development of the Respectful Relationships initiative in schools.

From 2016 respectful relationships education has been a core component of the Victorian curriculum. It is all about embedding a culture of respect and equality across the entire school community. “The whole-school approach to Respectful Relationships goes beyond curriculum, recognising that to drive real change, classroom learning needs to be reinforced by what is modelled within the school community.” - DET

At LHCS we want to see connections with respectful relationships in our classes across all subject areas. We also enthusiastically participate in events such as Love Bites, Wear it Purple Day and IDAHOBIT. More than this, we want the thinking behind respectful relationships to become part of everything we do within our school.

Next year, we’ll be participating in MORE (Modelling Respect & Equality),which is part of the JSS Men’s Project, Research shows that young Australian men who believe in outdated masculine stereotypes have higher risk of using violence, online bullying and sexual harassment, engaging in risky drinking and reporting poorer levels of mental health (Man Box). We’ll also be taking part in a research project by Dr Melissa Wolfe (Southern Cross University, Dr Eve Mayes (Deakin University), and Leanne Higham (Latrobe University) titled, Re-imagining school climate: building student capacity through creative pedagogy. This study intends to model how to affectively improve school climate through student-led critical-creative activity.

LHCS has always been a place that is accepting of difference, which makes our school an excellent environment for creating spaces, physical and relational, that allow young people to challenge traditional conceptions of gender, which are known to be limiting and harmful. These ideas will help to inform our thinking as we redesign some of the physical spaces around our school, such as the common rooms at Richmond and Coburg.

Student Awards Presentation

Our annual student awards presentation ceremony will be held on Thursday, 24 November. This is an opportunity for the school to acknowledge the hard work of our students over the past year and their academic achievement and attainment. It is also a chance to farewell students who are moving on (either graduating or continuing their education elsewhere).

We look forward to welcoming students, families, friends and other guests to our school for the  awards presentation ceremony at the following times:

Coburg: 9:45am, 24 November, 2022 (morning tea provided)

Richmond: 12:15pm (lunch),12:45pm (ceremony), 24 November, 2022
