Barista Training

Year 11 VCAL Barista & Food Handling Training

On Tuesday November 15, the Year 11 VCAL class undertook Barista and Food Handling training at the school, much to the jealousy of many of their peers. The day began with an induction process which covered safety in the coffee vans and a look at the varying jobs students could obtain with these qualifications.  Several students shared their experiences in their own workplaces and gave their classmates some tips and tricks to apply when they start making their own coffees.

Once induction was completed, the class was divided into two coffee vans that were packed to the rafters with several coffee machines, wash stations and storage space, and while it was a tight squeeze, the students navigated their way around the van very well. As the morning progressed, students made a variety of coffees using different methods of preparation and presentation, with many producing some interesting Latte art.  To conclude the barista training, some teachers were lucky (and brave enough) to try a coffee made by the students.

After their well-deserved, albeit short, lunch break, they waved the coffee vans goodbye to embark on their food handling training course. Students learned a lot from this course and some were surprised to learn how stringent some of the rules around food handling and cleanliness can be. Perhaps some will use their new-found expertise at home to actually clean up after themselves.

All in all, it was a great day and the Year 11 VCAL class, as always, represented the school and themselves perfectly.
