Deputy Principal, Teaching and Learning

2022 End of Year Examinations

At The Hamilton and Alexandra College, we believe in supporting our students to develop the key skills that they will require in a future world of study and work. We teach our students how to think, reflect, analyse, evaluate, and apply their knowledge to solve problems and present new ways of seeing the world. Teachers regularly check for understanding in the classroom and use this formative feedback to shape the learning objectives. Our examination program is designed to provide summative feedback and assess a student's achievement in a particular subject area.

The expectations for the end of year examinations are informed by the College framework for Teaching and Learning. We recognise that there is some anxiety about exams. We aim to support students in approaching the exam period and prepare them to study and review work so that they are ready to sit exams.

We have changed some of the processes and expectations in the lead up to the exams and the Step-Up Program that follows. A full exam timetable and exam guidelines have been sent home to parents and students this week.

Independent Study Sessions:

The exam timetable is designed to minimise study sessions for Middle Years students.

Senior Students will be required to attend supervised study in the library/other venues to be advised. Year 9-11 students can seek permission to work from home if they have finished exams for the day. Wendy Henderson will send permission forms to students and collate names of students who will study independently at home.

Sometimes students will complete an exam and have time remaining before the bell. Middle Years students are encouraged to have extra revision material to go on with after the exam. Materials will be brought to the exam venue and left outside the room until the study session begins.

Examination Guidelines:

Students and parents are encouraged to read through the exam guideline document to assist with exam preparation. This semester we have provided families with a printable examination preparation pack four week planner and a checklist for each subject.

If you have any questions, please contact your child’s mentor or the Head of Middle Years Mr Ben Hawthorne or Head of Senior Years Ms Helen Reiher.

Cyber Safe

Some advice for staying Cyber Safe:

We are certainly living through interesting times as far as Cyber crime is concerned. The breaches of security in recent months have been sobering to say the least. The Australian Government has a great website: Learn | Cyber.gov.au where you can read about ways to protect yourself online and download advice from a reliable resource. Simply explained steps are provided to put on your devices and in relation to your usernames and passwords.

Keep in mind that your children’s school issued devices have a number of safety factors activated. Also, if there is a problem with the device our amazing technical team of Mitchell Clode and James Kruger are able to assist. Loan devices can be issued from their office if your child’s device needs to be repaired. The programs we use are all backed up on the school system, so logging in to a loan device they will find all their OneNote Class notebooks and any Word, PowerPoint or Sway documents that they have created.

Technology is an integral part of the world we live in, so it makes sense to invest time in making sure that we use it wisely and protect our documents.

Best wishes,
