DADS' GOLF TRIP

On Caulfield Guineas weekend (Oct 12,13,14) the 6th SJDGA annual golf tournament was held back at its traditional home - Barnbougle. This year was a record attendance with 36 players vying for the coveted Brown Jacket and competing in the teams event (North v South) for the prestigious Gettysburg Shield.

Once again the weather was extremely kind and saw the three day event start and finish in very golf friendly conditions.

Friday was the Pro Am and commencement of the Gettysburg Shield. The Pro Am was hotly contested with Michael Cunningham (aka the unbackable favourite Winx), pulling away down the straight and winning with 38 points, ahead of a fast finishing Andrew Wood (courtesy of his new driver ex the Prahran cash converters) and the very consistent, methodical, some might say boring, Tim Webb (Webb Snr), both with 37 points. Anthony Hudson, still suffering the effects of the St Joan of Arc footy game, came in third in a moonboot with 36 points. Day one of the Gettysburg Shield was also a tight affair with the North coming away with a lead of 5 to 4 at close of play – even though the South had stand out individual performances from Winx and Webby Snr, they just couldn’t translate this into team ascendancy, even Winx lost his match.

Saturday was over to Lost Farm, for the start of the Brown Jacket competition and day two of the Gettysburg with perfect golf conditions again, which was just as well because some of the outfits chosen for bad shirt Saturday may not have survived poor weather – in the end Toby Simmons was voted winner of this event with his head to toe fluorescent yellow ensemble. The Southern Reds made a statement on the Saturday, winning 6 matches to 3, meaning the Northern Blues were going into Sunday 2 down (10/8). The sheer weight of expectation on Winx saw him (and team mate Jarrod Harrington) once again lose his match, this time to Gerard Feltham and Paul Delahunty. A similar ring to day one. The Brown Jacket had a clear leader in Ari Nimorakiotakis 2 under, with past winner Adam Ockwell and Calcutta auctioneer Chris Dodd two back in equal second and Webb Snr, Berin Wallace, Marcus Doherty and Jason Storer all a further shot back. James Small, Paul Digney, David Pham and Mark Cubelic also still in the hunt at 2 over. With half of the field within 8 shots of the lead it promised to be a very exciting second day of the Brown Jacket and also a very open and hotly contested Calcutta, run by Chris Dodd. There are still tears of laughter thinking about the auction – great job Doddy.

Day three and back at The Dunes – with the South taking a commanding lead in the Gettysburg Shield into the day, they had to only win eight of the eighteen matches to retain the shield, whereas the North had to fight back and win 11 of the 18 matches if the shield was to be returned to its rightful owner. It was a sea of blue early, with the North surging, the match of note being Shadow Fallon beating Jarrod (thank goodness for Gianni) Harrington 10 and 8. The tide then turned red and it looked like South were going to get a major run on, until Anthony Forster, three down against Chris Smith after 12, turned the ship around with a remarkable comeback to win 1 up – big weekend for Ant as he won all three matches over the weekend. Winx finally got on the board defeating the wounded Huddo but two wins by Jas Storer and Doddy against the odds and the two clubhouse leaders Ocky and Ari respectively, saw the mighty North home in a canter 19 to 17. For reference, the Gettysburg Shield is proudly on display in the school trophy cabinet.

The Brown Jacket was a tussle for the first 9 holes but unfortunately Ari left too may good shots out on the practise fairway Saturday afternoon and went to water on the back nine, Doddy was solid but could get enough points to bridge the gap, so it came down to a race between Webb Snr and Jas Storer. Webby storming home with a Sunday best equalling 37 points to take the Brown Jacket by 1 from a very consistent Jas Storer, who had a solid 36 points on Sunday (amazing what you can do on gardening leave!!). Well done to Tim Webb, the first two time winner of the Brown Jacket.

The best score for the Sunday was a three way tie, Webb Snr, Shadow Fallon and Jamie Pfahl, with Jamie winning on a count back.

We had 5 new players this tour, Paul Delahunty, Nick Crinis, Brendan Anderson, Michael Webb (Webb Jnr) and Gianni Conterno – who all were great additions. Gianni deserves a special mention as he managed to “win” the NAGA Turkey on his first outing and won it extremely comfortably, much to JH’s relief, with a not so commanding 4 points on Sunday – he was however a very gracious and positive winner of the award and already placed it on the mantelpiece as a reminder to practice prior to Barnbougle VII in 2019.

River Nile School brings you this special fundraiser and Q&A screening of The Baulkham Hills African Ladies Troupe.

We aim to raise funds and especially raise awareness of the educational benefits for refugee and asylum seeker women.

The River Nile School (RNS) is an independent senior VCAL school for young women – a safe and trusting place.

RNS offers full time programs delivering VCAL curriculum to re-engage Refugee and Asylum Seeker school aged women who have had disrupted schooling or who are struggling to cope.

RNS is a fee-free independent school, offering free childcare, free travel and free welfare to students.

THE BAULKHAM HILLS AFRICAN LADIES TROUPE is a celebration of the remarkable spirits of four African women survivors of sexual abuse, and the triumph of their improbable theatre troupe.

Four women fled from different parts of Africa to Australia in order to escape violence and abuse. They find a safe haven in Australia, but still they hold their pain silently within them. Until they decide to join a theatre group… and speak out. Under the nurturing guidance of theatre director Ros Horin, they collaborate to let their life stories be transformed into an extraordinary and joyously uplifting theatrical experience. This film charts their personal journeys from trauma to healing and public triumphs, as the Troupe’s show moves from a stage in western Sydney out to the world.

SCHOOL BANKING

The Commonwealth School Banking program has arrived at St James Catholic Primary School to help our children develop strong financial literacy skills, plus earn some extra benefits for our school.

School Banking Day is every THURSDAY

Students are to bring their yellow bank books in each THURSDAY and put them in the banking bag in their classroom. The bag will then be collected by one of our banking volunteers. Once the banking is processed the banking bag will be sent back to the class for bank books to be returned to students.
