Aquarium Excursion

On Thursday the 13th of September, the Year 1 students went on an excursion to the Melbourne Aquarium.

First, we got on the bus with our bags and our bus buddies and drove all the way into the city. When we arrived, we crossed the road and went into the park. Second, we met our guide Peta. Next, she taught us about sea stars, sharks, rays and many other things. Then Miss Quinlan took us on a tour around the second half of the Aquarium. After that, we went to see the 4D movie. At last we saw the penguins. They were jumping out of the water! Finally we went through the toy shop.

At the end of the day we hopped on the bus and drove back to St James. We were tired but we learnt lots!

Year 4

In Year 4, we had an action-packed end to Term 3.  Many of the Year 4s competed in Hoop Time against other schools, showing their great team work skills and enthusiasm all day.  The children also loved coming to school dressed up in their Footy Colours for Footy Day, where some of the Year 6 leaders guided the children through some fun activities on the day. The children enjoyed the chance to sharpen their AFL skills while having fun with their peers.

We also went on an Excursion to the Melbourne Museum, which linked to some of our learning about Early Explorers, the First Fleet, Early settlement in Australia, and Indigenous life in Australia before and after settlement. Thank you to the parents who came along and helped on the day!

This term, we have been off to a very productive start. In English, the children have been busy editing and publishing their narratives, and giving each other feedback on these. In Connected Learning, we are studying how to classify flora and fauna, as well as deepening our knowledge and understandings of The New Testament in the Bible. In Maths, we kicked off the term with a unit on ‘Time, Temperature and Data’, where the children have had the opportunity to practise telling the time and reading a thermometer, converting to and from 24 hour time, interpreting climate data, and creating their own climate graphs. The children have also completed a special ‘Maths Project’ that required them to apply their knowledge and skills from their learning into a real-life problem.

We are looking forward to an exciting Term 4!

MATHS - Learning about Capacity

This term children in Foundation have been learning about capacity and mass.

Children have begun to use mathematical language like lighter, heavier, full, empty, the same as, holds more or less.

Working in groups and using foam noodles, sand and water, the Foundation children estimated and worked out which containers held more or less water than others.

Children enjoyed the hands on experience and loved working in the sun.

Well done Foundation!

CONNECTED LEARNING - 'Hello World'

This term the Foundation children are learning about the world in the Connected Learning unit ‘Hello World’.

As part of this unit, we have asked parents to talk about the country they came from. These talks have been so interesting and informative for the children and teachers. The information the children recall after each presentation has been amazing. It has been a wonderful way for the children to learn about the world and how similar and different Australia is to other countries.

We would like to thank Andy, Saskia’s mum and Liliana, Jack’s mum who have shared treasured memories and traditions of their beautiful countries Slovakia and Columbia.

We look forward to learning about other countries in coming weeks.

Tadpoles To  FROGS

Last term beautiful Mrs Nicola bought into the Foundation classroom newly hatched tadpoles and a special water habitat. These tadpoles were in last term’s newsletter.

The children were curious as to how these little creatures grew and changed. Many questions have been asked by the children, parents and teachers and Mrs Nicola has been very generous with her time encouraging the children find out more about these curious little amphibians.

Over the holidays the tadpoles have changed. The children have been watching the tadpoles change into froglets and now into frogs. It has been an interesting journey.

Please come into the Foundation classroom to see these amazing little animals. Mrs Nicola has changed the habitat and you can use the magnifying glasses to see the frogs and the crickets they eat up close.

Thank you Mrs Nicola for working with the children and making the Foundation classroom an amazing hands on learning environment.

Firefighter Visit Wednesday

On the 24th of October several firefighters came to visit St James, their intention was to raise money to fight PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.) Children were asked to bring a gold coin and buy an optional sausage for $2. In the end we raised a total of $732.85 for firefighters.  This year 650 firefighters climbed 28 floors at Crown Metropol wearing 25kg of gear to raise money for the mental crisis.
