Foundation - Level 2 Swimming Program

Permission letters for the Foundation - Level 2 Swimming program were sent home in early August. The students will undertake a nine day program from Monday 11 September to Thursday 21 September, having a 40 minute lesson daily at the Monash Aquatic Recreation Centre (MARC) along Waverley Road. The cost of the program is $103 and we would encourage all students to participate as students will be learning valuable water safety skills as well as having swimming instruction. If you do not want your child to participate please e-mail your child’s class teacher ASAP. We need full payment and level forms returned to the office by Friday 25 August 2017. Please come and have a chat with me if you have any further questions on this valuable school program.

Eastern Metropolitan Region Hockey 7's Gala Day

After the 22 excited Lebel 4, 5 and 6 girls and boys donned their Jells Park sports shirts and collected their gear, we set off to a full day of hockey played at the Hawthorn/TEM Hockey Grounds full of hope and conviction that this was going to be our year!

This was the first year where all of the Eastern Metro Region teams were played at the one venue – so it was huge. There were 18 boys teams (in 4 pools) and 14 girls teams (in 3 pools).

The weather was glorious, despite forecasts advising otherwise and the first matches got under way in perfect conditions. JPPS’s first games for the Boys and Girls teams were played at the same time and at opposite ends of the venue. The boys defeated their opponents, Auburn PS, 2-0. The girls were not so lucky and were narrowly defeated by Roberts McCubbin PS 0-1.

Round 2 for JPPS saw the boys play a very strong Boroondara Park PS team who were coming off a 4-0 win in their first match. Our boys played very well but were beaten 1-2 in a hotly contested match. The girl’s team also played a well-drilled team from Yarra Valley Grammar. Our girls fended off many goals and at half time were only 0-1 down. The Yarra girls kept up their fierce attack and eventually were able to score 2 more goals leaving our girls with a 0-3 loss.

Our boys were scheduled to play an extra, ‘friendly’ match against Mount View PS who were in Pool 2. Our boys played brilliantly and scored more than 7 goals to 0 – they scored so often in the 2 x 8 minute halves that the umpire lost count! Sadly this didn’t count for any championship points and showed the quality of the Pool we had drawn.

In our final round of matches the boys were defeated by Milgate PS in a nail biting encounter. After spending most of the game 0-2 down, JPPS scored with 1 minute left and came dangerously close to equalizing in the final seconds. Sadly it wasn’t to be, the game ended with a 1-2 loss and we finished 3rd in our pool.

The girls had a similarly exciting finish where they scored on several occasions but were disallowed as they were scored from outside the shooting circle. They were defeated 1-2 by Belle Vue PS and finished 4th in their pool.

The behaviour and sportsmanship of all the JPPS students was fantastic and the day was a huge success with the children having a great time and learning a lot more about competitive hockey. A huge thanks must go to Miss Barton (Pre-service teacher in Mr Zach’s class) who expertly coached the girl’s team. I am also hugely appreciative of the parents who volunteered to drive the students to and from the venue, spending the entire day watching the games. It is always fabulous having familiar faces in the crowds!
