Head of Junior School
Mrs Jo Messer
Well, here we are at the end of Week 7 of a nine-week term. We have managed to fit in many events thus far and we still have many events go for the remainder of the term, such as the:
We are very excited to welcome a new staff member onto the Junior School staff next term. Mrs Sue Burrows has been appointed to the role of Head of Learning Enhancement. This is a position I have held in a dual role in conjunction with Head of Junior School for a number of years. We are looking forward to the wealth of experience and expertise Mrs Burrows has in this role. Mrs Burrows will commence on April 24.
NAPLAN testing has now finished for all Year 3 and 5 boys. These testing days went very smoothly. Results, which will be sent home, will not be available until later in the year.
I would like to congratulate and welcome our new look Parents and Friends Association for 2023. At this week’s AGM, Ms Abbey Doggett (Ned Heddle, Year 4), was voted in as President, Mr Matthew Gillie (Clancy and Sebastian, Year 4 and 1) was voted in as Secretary and Mr Nick Findlay (Lewis, Year 4) as Treasurer. We also welcome committee members: Maria Bond (Leo, Ben and Edward Pigden, Year 9, 6 and 4), Julie Pepperrell (Lincoln, Year 1), Sharni Rickards (Xavier and Hugo, Year 6 and 4) and Samm Harrington (Atticus and Archie, Year 5 and 8).
The 50 Cent Fair today at the Junior School was a great success. The Mini Vinnies boys had a wonderful time organising and running the games and the students had a wonderful time participating in the activities. We are proud to have raised over $400 for Project Compassion. A big thank you to the families of our Mini Vinnies boys for donating the chocolate prizes. We have some left over so we may have to have another 50 Cent Fair next term!
On Friday May 12 we will be holding our annual Mother’s Day stall. Boys will be asked to bring along $5 to purchase a gift for their mum or significant female relative in their life. Proceeds will go to the P&F who support initiatives to benefit the boys.
Change of Date
Mother’s Day Breakfast is now Friday May 19. We have changed the date of our Mother’s Day Breakfast to the Friday after Mother’s Day.
Last Friday the Junior School celebrated St Patrick’s Day in style. To celebrate, we invited all staff and students to dress in green for the day. Our SVC and Dwyer House Leaders also helped by making green food to sell at morning tea to raise money for the new air hockey table in the Junior Hall and for Caritas. Thank you to everyone who joined in the spirit of the day. With all food items selling for $1.00 and ‘lime’ milkshakes for $2, we raised $305. $100 has been given to Miss Daun for the air hockey table and $200 for Caritas.
The first day of Term 2 on April 24 is a student free day, set aside for Parent Teacher interviews. Your son’s teacher may request to see you on this day or alternatively, you may request to see them. This is a wonderful opportunity to connect with teachers and check in on progress made so far this year. Further information and how to book interviews times will be circulated before the end of term.
Last week SVC participated in the Tasmania Reads initiative and the response to the inaugural Get Caught Reading display was received with great enthusiasm. Both class teachers and parents contributed photos which is still growing! Can you guess what the most comfortable reading position was? Check out the photos!

Congratulations to St Mary's College and Mr Phil Shanny, Café Manager. They have now achieved PLATINUM accreditation with the SmartFood Award Program. ‘SMC reflects a whole school approach to health and wellbeing and a strong commitment to sustainability principles.’ They are the only canteen in Tasmania to achieve this accreditation.
It has long been a desire of SVC to become more sustainable. With that in mind, our SRC and Year 6 School Leaders will be starting a campaign to reduce the amount of rubbish we are creating each day. From the beginning of next term, we are asking that boys’ lunchboxes do not contain any packaging on a Wednesday. We are encouraging all students to commence the initiative in the last two Wednesdays of this term, so we can be ready for the commencement of Term 2 (on Wednesday April 26). Any packaging that is present in boys’ lunchboxes will be taken home with them. To kickstart this initiative we have included some photos of the SRC boys’ lunchboxes, to give some ideas of what a lunchbox could look like. We ask that you embrace and support this initiative in the interests of SVC becoming more sustainable. NO WRAP = NO RUBBISH.
Nude Food Day is a nationwide initiative developed to encourage kids and parents to eat well, live well, and eliminate all unnecessary packaging. The benefits of packing a rubbish free lunch are:
