Mr Derek Lennon, Head of Sport

Last weekend saw Marist host St Peters Lutheran College on Saturday in volleyball and cricket. Marist were dominant across the teams with the two first teams sharing the spoils on the day.

The 1st VI were gallant in defeat, and while they lost in three, it was a tight affair and the boys showed real Marist spirit to fight to the last minute for each other and the school. The cricket was another tight affair with Will Nickelson guiding us home with the tail to secure a hard fought win, which keeps alive the dream for these boys.

The 1st  XVIII had an impressive double, winning on both Wednesday night and Friday night to keep their premiership aspirations alive with three games to go. The Friday night against St Laurence’s is the biggest AFL game in the short history of the competition for Marist. It would be great to see a big crowd cheering the boys home at Coorparoo.

I take this opportunity to remind our whole College community about the need to remain positive and supportive of the boys playing sport on the weekend. Over my career in independent schools I have always been able to say it is a safe, inclusive and supportive environment for opposition, referees, coaches and our own players to go about their business of doing their best each week. This has also been the case in my short time here at Marist. I feel what we are looking for from our community is beautifully summed up in the rugby handbook. Thank you to everyone for making this a friendly, supportive environment for all.

Reminder for Spectators

Remember that the boys participate in sport for their enjoyment, not yours.

Recognise the importance of volunteer coaches and referees. They give their time and resources to provide a game for young participants.

This is a GAME!

The referees are human (and often volunteers).

Remember that young people learn best by example.

Support all efforts to remove verbal and physical abuse from the game.

Communication

We use the College app to share all key operational information including team lists, weekly draws, training schedules, contact details, season calendar, the handbook and selection criteria. Draws and team lists are posted on the app as soon as practically possible each week.

The College Newsletter includes a summary of the previous week, key information for the wider school community, including match reports and highlights.

Wet Weather and Cancellations

We will attempt to play to train and play all games of football. Should the weather be inclement, a decision will be made by 6:00am for morning training sessions and 2:30pm for afternoon training sessions. A decision for whether game days will proceed will be communicated by 6:30am.

All communication around wet weather and cancellations will be via the Marist College app.

AFL - Mr Adam Earnshaw and Ms Tara Franklin

A successful win for many of the AFL teams this week. Kickstarting the week was the Cameron-Andrews Cup which our 1st XVIII fought hard with a match-winning play right on full-time. Thank you to Charlie Cameron for supporting our boys and for his words of encouragement. Marist Old Boys Nick Tucker also highlighted this nail-biting match in the Courier Mail - Code Sports Article. In other great news, our 1st XVIII also had a win over Iona at Iona College on Friday afternoon. This week we face St Laurence’s College which will be our toughest game for the season!

The Year 8B, 9/10A and 9/10B teams all had a win at Everton Football Club with the 9/10As dominating over St Peter’s Lutheran College with a score of 111-8. 9/10Bs manage to sneak in a win scoring a goal right before the siren. 8Bs had their second convincing win for the season and are going from strength to strength. The 7As tried hard but went down to Villanova College Mt Maria. The 8As and the 7Bs had a BYE and are keen to face Round 5 with strength and determination.

A special thank you to our goal umpires and scorers who have assisted this season so far in particular Austin Gillett, Ben Bright, Owen Hair, Sarah Stirling, Jody Cook, Justin Cook, Gerard David and Nadine McAllister.

A reminder that all teams have their Blue and Gold yearbook photos taken this Friday at school during first break. All players must be in full AFL uniform including football boots.

Cricket - Mr Mitch Reid

1st XI Recap vs St Peters

Marist lost the toss and the visiting team decided to bat first.

This weekend’s game against St Peters Lutheran College was the annual Pink Stumps McGrath Foundation Day which consists of pink stumps, pink playing caps and for people to wear pink to and raise money for this great initiative. With some bad news during the week seeing captain Ben ‘Fergus’ Ferguson suffering from stress fractures and missing from this week’s lineup and Will Nickelson taking over the captaincy. We all knew we had to take our cricket to a level higher and players to step up with the ball. With Tom Davies and Louis Morris opening the bowling, we had to strike early and make an impact on the top order. It was a patient wait for our first wicket as the opening batsmen for St Peters came out and played an aggressive style of cricket. With the St Peters boys having an opening partnership of 59 it was time for a bowling change and soon enough when Sam Lewis made his impact in the game striking first with the ball. After a patient start the Marist bowlers capitalized with the new ball and bashed their lengths, before putting another top-order bat in the sheds with Louis Morris trapping the opening batsman in front. With two new bats at the crease, we needed to take advantage straight away, putting on a 50-run partnership with a very slow strike rate the middle-order bats was frustrating. The breakthrough from Flynn Cleary to break the partnership in the middle order batsmen had come in and were in a rush, so much in a rush that Cleary took 3, Tom Wex got a direct hit run out square and then Piper and Nickelson were able to get a runout meaning they lost 5 wickets for just 20 runs. St Peters 7 -148 with 10 or so overs to go we had to bring back Tom Davies and Joey Laner on to clean the tail up and which they did with Tom Davies forcing a run out and Joey Laner taking a late scalp to have them bowled out for 192. This could have been a much higher chase but towards the end our bowlers really showed the skill level they have.

Wex and Piper were sent out after having an immaculate feed for lunch, with some very sharp bowling from the St Peters attack they had stood their ground and showed them we weren’t here to muck around. With an early scalp of Tom Wex getting trapped in front in the 5th over losing a wicket wasn’t ideal. With Nickelson coming in and going about his business, runs started to flow until a St Peters fielder pulled a one-hand screamer to dismiss Frank Piper in the 12th over. James Brandon then joined Nickelson at the crease at 2 -40. The drinks break had been taken when Piper was dismissed with some very simple messages of be they’re at the end and take this as deep as possible James Brandon hit his first ball for 4 and then we were off. With a quick 50-run partnership between Brandon and Nickelson, Brandon was unlucky to depart from a loud LBW shout. Then losing 2 quick wickets of Marshall and Cleary the hosts were stuck at 5-99 chasing 192. Next to the crease was Laner. He showed amazing maturity with the bat and not throwing his wicket away and just rotating the strike to Nickelson so we could get some runs ticking on the board. A quick 41-run partnership between Nickelson and Laner was crucial until Joey had unluckily been caught trying to hit over the top. The score was now 6-140 and we still needed 52 runs with 4 wickets remaining for the win. A quick little cameo from Tom Davies and Louis Morris with the bat was much needed until Davies falling at 7-149 and Morris falling at 8-172 next to the crease was Sam Lewis. With some very ideal bowling for Nickelson he was able to quickly capitalize and hit the much-needed couple of boundaries. With two wickets in hand, Sam Lewis had to play a very crucial roll with the bat and so he did, scoring the winning 2 runs and ending the game in the 47th over. Unfortunately, this left Captain Nickelson on 96 not out but the win was more important and Marist keep the Premiership race alive.

It was an amazing day and thank you to all the staff who helped organise the pink McGrath foundation day for this wonderful cricket day. The next game is the top-of-the-ladder clash versus St Patrick's College Shorncliffe.

Will Nickelson 96* (135)
James Brandon 26 (30)
Flynn Cleary 3-25 (6)
Louis Morris 1-19 (10)
Sam Lewis 1-20 (10)

Selection

These provisional teams will be posted on the College App on Friday week 8. These squads will continue training until the holidays at the same times as the trials.

What happens if I am not selected?

All players who miss out on A squad selection are required to attend the trials for all other teams to be seen by the other coaches so you can be fairly selected into the appropriate team for your ability.

Trials for All Other Teams

The team trials for all other teams will start on Saturday 25 March and continue in Week 10. We are scheduled to play A-C teams against St Joseph’s Gregory Terrace on Saturday 15 April.

Players will be asked at trials if they are available for this trial. Teams for these matches will be posted on the College App on Friday of week 10. At this stage, these teams are provisional and will be subject to change over the first few weeks of Term 2.

Trials are in various locations and days- check the trial schedule on the College App carefully closer to the dates.

Boys will need to report in at the first trial they attend to the Year Coordinator and ensure their name is marked off for every trial they attend afterwards.

Boys should look to attend as many trials as they can for selection but need to balance with their academic workload and also honour your Term 1 sport commitments. Consider your academic exam schedule and make informed decisions about whether you need to attend a trial or miss a trial to prepare for exams.

If you are unable to attend the scheduled trials you need to email the Year Level Co-ordinator in advance of the trial to notify. Provide your name and student number and the reason you are missing the trial.

Boys are to wear Marist apparel, football boots and shin pads to trial.

You can find the selection criteria on the College App.

Illness and injury will impact on the selection process. Trials will continue until the end of Week 1, some year levels may take longer than others. This is to allow all boys to be graded fairly.

Players will need to indicate availability for trial matches on Saturday 15 April at the Saturday internal trial round (25 March).

Tennis – Mr Andrew Ward (Director of Tennis)

Unfortunately, our Division 2 and 3 Friday fixtures were cancelled due to rain. Keep your fingers crossed for this week lads.

Our 1st X squad will be picked and commence training on Tuesday and Thursday each week. The first session will be on April 27 for the 10 picked in the squad and will train for free for the term.

Please put your name in the SignUp by Friday 12:00pm so we know you are coming, and don’t forget MATES!

If your team prefers to a combined approach to covering the canteen, working around your sons’ batting and bowling, a couple of options to do this might be:

  • One parent assigns themselves to multiple slots and takes on the responsibility of sharing around the team;
  • One parent puts a team name in the SignUp sheet that are committed to across the day.

This provides the visibility we need to limit the number of SignUp asks across the end of the week, and gives certainty for the running of the canteen.
