Year 6 STEM

All students attending St Louis de Montfort's Aspendale have the right to feel safe. The care, safety and wellbeing of children and young people is a fundamental responsibility of all within our school.

Solar Buddy and Liter of Light in Year 6

Our amazing year 6 students have been exploring energy poverty this term in STEM and looking at some of the solutions that have already been designed.

After exploring the liter of light initiative from the Philippines, which uses discarded water bottles to provide light to many properties within poorer communities, our children made their own prototypes demonstrating how this technology works. Included in this was an exploration of how light moves and in particular how refraction causes the rooms to light up.

Here are some of our in progress shots from the past term.

They were also given the chance to work with Solar Buddy and Origin Energy to create solar-powered lights for children who currently rely on kerosine lamps for light in PNG. This amazing programme saw our students write letters to these children and then build their own solar powered light.

We look forward to hearing back from them soon to see how we have made a difference in their lives.
