KLA Area - VET

For our VET students, Term 4 is an exciting time of year. The current Year 12 students have completed their HSC exams and the Year 11 cohorts undertaking their first Industry Based Workplacement. It was pleasing to see so many HSC students choose to sit the non-compulsory exam for their VET subject and is a positive reflection of their confidence in their knowledge of subject content.
Hospitality
With a week of Workplacement undertaken in the Pear Tree Café, and one in Industry, our Hospitality students are making great progress through heir course. Recent activity included the training and assessment of the Senior First Aid course.
Information Technology (IT)
The year has been full of interesting projects, work placements and innovative learning in both the Information, Digital Media and Technologies course (Year 9 Cert I) and the Information & Digital Technologies course (Year 10 & 11 Cert III).
The main focus has been finding meaningful work placements for students in Years 10 and 11 which have been hard to come by in the local area. Working with TAFE, local industry reps such as Devraj Mukherjee at Anomaly Software and other interested parties, we have created a series of events and programs which exposes students to IT workplace situations and gives them a creative learning experience.
The Year 11 students who sat their HSC in November were all pleased to finish the course after many months of solid preparation. Jacob McMullen, Brandon Taylor and Alex Allen all pushed hard towards achieving their best results and we wish them all well when they receive the fruits their labour in December.
The Year 9 cohort worked extremely cohesively this year, with many Certificate I’s being achieved. Some great assessments and projects were created throughout the year. Piper and Sheridan represented the girls with distinction, whilst the boys were led by the irrepressible Anthony Mason and Jack Burness.
Metal and Engineering
Year 11 have been productive in the completion of the majority of Core units for this subject. Oxy, Mig and Arc welding has been covered, along with Oxy and Plasma cutting. Students have just completed their workplacements at a variety of local business such as Engineering workshops, aviation maintenance, plumbers and electricians. All reports from hosts and students were positive and a reflection of the ‘work readiness’ and maturity of the students.
The Year 12 Metal and Engineering class were assessed competent in all their units of work thanks to a team based approach to their work which lead to students challenging and supporting each other to gain the most from the subject. The HSC intensive study day was a great chance to review the subject content and refine exam technique before the HSC exam. All members of the class are congratulated for the effort and application they put towards this subject.
Construction
The Year 11 Construction class have been building timber frame dog houses throughout the second semester. These ‘mini’ houses are complete with raised platform floor, insulated stud walls, internally lined, externally lined with Western red Cedar weatherboards and a pitched zincalume roof. These will be on-sale after completion, contact Mr Gilham at the College for information.
The Year 12 cohort completed the HSC course with the masonry units in Term 3. This included formwork, concreting and brick and block laying.
