Student Voice

Student Voice and Agency

At Cranbourne East Secondary College students are encourage and provided opportunity to express their “voice” inside and outside the classroom.

Student Governance

One of the more visible examples of student voice on campus is student governance. This includes the Student Representative Council consisting of the school captains, year level captains, approximately 100 class captains and student members of various committees. This year these leaders and emerging leaders will be tasked with increasing responsibility for designing and implementing school events and initiatives.

The first two major events being organized by the students are:

Student leader induction, start of school year assembly, to be livestreamed on Tuesday, February 15.

The Harmony Day cultural assembly (with traditional dances) and food carnival on Monday, March 28.

Clubs and Associations

CESC benefits from several clubs and associations to meet the interests of almost any student. These opportunities range from Art Club to Wellbeing Club and students are encouraged to try out as many as they can until they find the one that is right for them. This is an important school initiative as research shows involvement in clubs extends student connections outside the classroom helping to build academic confidence and reduce bullying.

Student Voice

The Victoria Department of Education and Training writes in their Amplify document:

“Authentic student voice provides opportunities for students to collaborate and make decisions with adults around what and how they learn and how their learning is assessed.”

At CESC this extends to every student in every class. This year the school is continuing its program to provide professional learning for teachers so that Voice is embedded in their classroom practice. An SRC driven communications program will also ensure that every student is aware of Student Voice opportunities and responsibilities. Regular surveys and the creation of student action teams will further establish the two way communication necessary for effective Student Voice.
