Learning in Year 4

Hello fabulous Year Four Families! Wow, we cannot believe we are at the end of Term 2! Our students have really taken on and adapted to our new way of teaching and learning. It has been wonderful to see their growth and progress this term, we are all so proud of them.

Literacy

In Morphology, we have been learning how to add suffixes ing (to make words present tense), ed (to make words past tense) and the vowel suffix -y (to make something into an adjective). We have been practising following the rules for when we add these suffixes to base words. For Phonics and Spelling this month, we have been learning that  u makes 2 sounds ‘y’ and ‘oo’. We have also learnt that ui as in fruit and ew as in screw

In Literature and Comprehension, students have really been enjoying analysing Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. We have been identifying the main idea in a passage or text. Students used the sentence frame ‘The main idea of this text is… some of the important details to remember are…’. This month we have done a review on summarising, questioning and making connections. To celebrate finishing the story we watched the movie, comparing and contrasting the book and the movie.

In Creating Texts, students have been learning about the structure of a persuasive text. They have been using strong persuasive techniques to convince their reader of their opinion.

Maths

In Mathematics, students have been learning to identify the different parts of a fraction. Students have identified fractions, located them on a number line and found equivalent fractions. Students made their own fraction walls out of strips of paper. In Maths, we have also been learning about Time. Students have reviewed how to read the time to the quarter hour and to the minute. We have been calculating elapsed time to the hour and completing worded problems to practise their understanding.
