Year 2

Ms Gililand, Mr Rowley, Ms Michetti and Ms Kay

Hello Year 2 families!

We are at the end of Term 2 and are very excited to share some of the exciting things we have been working on in the classroom!

Literacy

In Literacy, the students have blown us away with all their hard work. Students have grown confidence in segmenting and blending sounds, separating syllables and investigating the start and end sounds in common words.

We have been incorporating more oral language into our literacy blocks and have begun to notice a dramatic improvement in the students’ abilities to use full sentences when sharing their ideas. This has been supported by the use of sentence stems on our slides, take a look at the example slide below!

We have finished Stage 7.1 of our Little Learners Love Literacy program! We have been reviewing these sounds towards the end of term and have also been learning about the suffix -ing. We are very proud of our Year 2 students for confidently identifying, writing and saying the Stage 7.1 phonemes (sounds) and graphemes (letters) below.

Challenge: What is the rule for using ai and ay? If you’re not sure, test and see if your child can remember the rule!

Students will continue with their progress through the handwriting unit, moving onto letters and numbers including u, U, f, F, h, H, m, M, n, N, r, R, 6, 7, 8 & 9! The students' handwriting has shown an improvement this term and we are very impressed with their development.

In Writing, we have been building our understanding of synonyms and antonyms. This knowledge has helped us to create some rather wonderful descriptive sentences.

We will continue revising all that we have learnt this term and hope to continue our progress next term!

Numeracy

In Numeracy, the students have been able to improve their learning stamina which means we are seeing some fabulous progress in our Math EDI lessons. Students have spent time exploring the unit of Location. This has involved reading maps, identifying and locating items on a map as well as providing directions.

History

Students have been exploring how technology has changed and how this change impacts our daily lives. We have looked at changes in home life, including toys, cooking and clothing. The Year 2 students have also been asked to write a letter from the perspective of someone living in the past. To wrap up our unit of learning, our Year 2 students had the opportunity to visit Cooper’s Settlement. The students explored a day in the life of someone living 100 years ago, including what going to school would have felt like.

The Year 2 team would like to say a big thank you to all parents and carers for your continued support this term. We have seen so much growth from all students and we are eager to watch them continue to blossom in Semester 2. Have a safe and happy break over the Term 2 holidays.

Are You Smarter than a 2nd Grader?

Here is an example of a Homophone Detective task we completed recently. Can you figure out what each picture is and spell the words correctly?!
