1/2 K

Reading

This week in 1/2K we have read the story Max by Bob Graham. Max  is the son of legendary superheroes Captain Lightning and Madam Thunderbolt. Max has a cape and a mask, but he doesn't fly. His parents can't understand it. It seems that Max is just an ordinary boy, until finally, to save a falling baby bird, Max discovers he can fly!

From the story the children explored adjective, verbs and adverbs that describe the characters, their actions and how they are moving in the story. Some of our favourite words were; swoop, hurtle, firmly, hover, legendary, ordinary and important.

The children then used some of these words to write their own story about a superhero using correct sentence structure. Look at the fantastic stories they have written below.

Speaking and Listening

Last week the children looked at how the weather can change in line with our Inquiry topic of change this term. The children explored the different types of weather that we can experience in Victoria including, rain, wind, fog, sun and snow. The children then wrote their own weather report focusing on describing the weather, the items you may need in this type of weather and the change that may occur in the weather during the day. Then we created our weather report backgrounds and finally after lots of practise we filmed our reports. Keep an eye out on Seesaw for our films.

Maths

This week and last week in Maths we have been learning about measurement. The children have explored the length and width of items in our classroom. We compared objects around and room and ordered them from the shortest length or width to the longest length or width. Then we measured the length and width of our items using informal units such as paperclips, blocks, sticks or dominoes.

Next we moved onto measuring our height. We explored how we can accurately measure our height by cutting a piece of string to our exact height. The children then compared their height to others in the class and we ordered ourselves from shortest to tallest. Finally we used our height chart to explore how tall we were in centimeters and see if we had ordered ourselves correctly.

The final measurement we explored was the Mass of items. The children discovered that Mass is another way of describing the weight of an object. We used the balance scales to compare the Mass of objects and discover if items we heavier or lighter than each other.
