Prep
Dear Prep families,
It is hard to believe that Term 2 is finished. Term 2 has been jam-packed with excursions, incursions and various learning activities across the curriculum learning areas. Throughout the term, the Preps have demonstrated persistence and positive attitudes towards their learning when faced with challenging tasks. I have also enjoyed the Home Learning posts on Seesaw.
I wish you all a restful break and look forward to another term of great learning.
Kind regards,
Miss Melanie
Literacy
The Preps have continued to respond to the story Three Little Pigs. They discussed the main ideas in sequence, starting at the beginning, then the middle and end. The oral retelling of the story allowed the students to create a story map. The teacher scribed their recount of the narrative, and the students drew the accompanying drawings. The students have also practised writing a simple sentence about the characters using Colourful Semantics prompts.
As the term has progressed, the students participate in literacy rotations. During the rotations, the Preps practise different elements of the literacy curriculum. For example, they independently log onto iPads and read or listen to stories; they manipulate familiar sounds to make simple CVC words, identify the beginning, middle and end sounds; they segment and blend CVC words and practise correct letter formation and size. This week the students were introduced to a new letter and sound character, Ollie Otter.
Maths
In Math, the students have been finding the number facts for the numbers between 3 and 10. The Preps have been encouraged to explain to a partner how they know they have found all the combinations that make a particular number. They have also been making small doubles and understanding the concept of a pair.
A popular game this week in maths has been Paddocks. The students play in pairs; each player has two six-sided dice and square paper. They take turns rolling the die, combining the numbers and then colouring the correct number of squares. The aim of the game is to see who can cover the most squares. The game also allows students to practise their small doubles, number fact recall and counting skills.
Inquiry
The classroom was buzzing with excitement each afternoon as the Preps created and constructed their diorama depicting the habitat of their chosen creature. There was lots of glueing, cutting, problem-solving and artistic thinking. This activity also allowed students to go back each day, to look at their construction and add something to their diorama to improve it.
