Careers Experience

Year 10

For the last week of Term 2 our Year 10 students have been busy participating in our Careers Experience program.

Being involved in work experience in one form or another is an invaluable insight into the world of work, regardless of the type of work or the degree of active participation.

The benefits of Work Experience:

  • Career aspirations can be confirmed or the realisation that the career is not for you
  • The understanding of the world of work is gained, first hand
  • New skills are developed
  • Team building skills
  • Interpersonal and communication skills
  • The relationship between what you are learning at school and what is happening in the workplace is developed
  • Independence and confidence grow
  • Motivation to continue with the career path you have chosen
  • Exploration of Career Options.

Careers Experience at DSC is an integral part of the Year 10 Career Education programme.  More than 200 students have been out on traditional placements this week, tasting the world of work on site at various work locations such as primary Schools, music production, cafes, construction sites, architecture, laboratory, hairdressers,  real estate agents, dentists and fitness centres just to name, many!

As we head into Term 3 when students will begin to make course selections for their final years of school, they will now be able to draw on the information they have gained this week to help with their decision making.

More student stories from their Careers Experience week will follow next term, but here are a few in so far...

Christian M. has been with Templestowe Park Primary School helping students with reading and completing maths fractions as part of their classwork.

James D. has been placed at Serpell Primary School during his work experience week.

Nicolas W. has been placed at the Doncaster Secondary College Administration team and provides his reflection below:

I'm a student currently doing work experience at this school. On my second day, I was given the task of observing and photographing Ms Cipolato's Year 7 Food Technology class to create content for the school newsletter. From what I observed, the class were really excited to be outside in the Well-being garden, planting their own seedlings. This activity is to help them understand where food comes from.

On my third day of work experience, I accompanied the Year 9 MyFuture class to Zero95 to learn about what to expect when working at a workplace. They had a lot of fun overall and showed the staff major respect. The staff told them about their experiences at their workplace and the class responded quite well by asking questions and listening to the speech.

From my personal experience as a work experience student, I was helping out Ms Hayward and Ms Fairweather, completing various tasks like laminating, designing on Canva, helping with the newsletter, taking photos of activities around the school and helping out other teachers when in need. I also went to the Wellbeing garden and Zero95 to collect evidence for the school newsletter. Overall, I had a really fun time as a work experience student and I’d like to thank Ms Fairweather and Ms McKinley for organizing this experience for me.

Georgia M. has been completing work experience at the Doncaster library and has really been enjoying her time there. She has learnt about the Dewey decimal system and book reservations. She has been really happy that she has been able to do this for work experience and hopes that she will get to work there again in the future.
