Middle School

These Year 9 students are off to University already!

The Melbourne University Girl Power in IT and Engineering program is for female high school students interested in STEM (science, tech, engineering & maths) and aims to contribute towards gender parity in engineering and IT disciplines. 40 students from across the state are selected to attend a camp at Melbourne University during the July school holidays where they will meet STEM students & leaders and be immersed into a world of tech!

From over 500 applications received, we are thrilled to announce that two of our Year 9 students have been selected! Congratulations to Hana and Jeeveysha of 9F for all their hard work in perfecting their submission and responding well in the shortlist interviews.

Both girls will be attending this amazing academic opportunity in the winter school holidays and we can't wait to hear more about their experience when we return in Term 3.

Ending the Term with a Win & a new member of our community!

Guess what… well you won’t be able to guess this one so we’ll just tell you… The Year 9 Class of 2023 has officially adopted an Manta Ray! You’re probably wondering how that happened… Our Science classes have been chipping away on Education Perfect to enter the Sustainable Oceans Competition. Now that we’ve won, we can all share in celebrating our adoption of a very important part of the ecosystem.

As part of the prize we also get a Free Party Food voucher… The only catch is that it won’t feed all 220 Year 9s so we will aim to use this as a means of rewarding students who were most engaged with this competition and who have demonstrated great work ethics in Science classes. Watch this space!!

Exploring MyCity

This week the year 9 students had the opportunity to participate in the “liveability city walk” excursion as part of the MyCity curriculum. Students were taken on a guided tour from the Collins Street Baptist Church, to inform students on systematic social issues such as homelessness, wealth disparity and safe living in Melbourne. Students were educated on the significance and history of notable landmarks, as well as encouraged to see society and people with an open mind.Students were given the opportunity to explore Melbourne Central independently before returning back to school together.

Sea Life with MyAnimal

In the continuation of World Oceans Day from last week, our Year 9 MyAnimal class partook in a guided tour by Melbourne Aquarium which focused on the topic of conservation. Students learnt of the conservational challenges rising at our doorstep of Port Philip Bay, and were informed of ways that invasive species and pollution negatively affected our unique wildlife.

G-Block Torture Chamber

Our Year 9 Scientists were experimenting with surface area and the nervous system this week, testing how the body responds to stimulus. Turns out that these students possess a strong mind and nerves of steel... thanks to the workings of science! By spreading all of the nails' pressure points evenly across the body's surface, skin puncturing is avoided. Just an example of how physics can save your life!
