Year 10 Work Experience
We have had a very busy fortnight in interschool sport, and a successful one! Thank you to Mia Haas, AFL Sports Trainee, for all her help and support (and often captions!) with these events.
AFL
Senior Boys
Our senior team made it to regionals, and although sadly they lost all three games, their sportsmanship was great and they had heaps of fun in their final year of interschool sport.
James Phillips
Year 7 Boys
The team played against Glenroy College and AIA and won both games! Against AIA the team were down in the first quarter but a well timed goal boosted their confidence. Coupled with some last minute position changes it helped the team come away with a 34-15 win.

Good luck and congratulations to Hana, Laila and Lyric who have been selected for the Adam Saad Pathways Academy for 2023. They will train at IKON park and then represent the Academy in a tournament.
Saskia W (Year 11), Lyric M (Year 8) and Laila R (Year 10) competed in the All Nations and Kickstart Tournament over the holidays with some of the most talented 14-16yo girls with Indigenous and multicultural backgrounds from across Victoria.
Badminton
Junior Girls
Our junior girls' badminton team had a wonderful experience as they participated in the Moreland Division competition on Friday, 16 June, hosted by Pascoe Vale Girls' College. It was a notable achievement for our girls as they took part in their first-ever badminton competition. Despite the challenging matches, our A team (comprised of Ella, Lu, Vera, and Racquel) and our B team (including Ari, Edith, Sadie, and Freya) demonstrated great sportsmanship and determination, even though they both lost 0-6 against Pascoe Vale. The girls had a fantastic time and are already eagerly looking forward to the competition next year. We applaud their effort and can't wait to witness their growth in future events.

First game was a challenging 2-1 win against AIA, and then we found our groove and beat the other AIA and Pascoe Vale Girls 7-0 and 9-0. The team worked very well together and showed lots of team spirit. Next stop Regionals.

The boys played well, a 3-1 win against AIAM and an 8-0 win against AIACS to just fall short 2-0 in the grand final against John Fawkner College. A hard fought day and great sportsmanship by all involved.

As part of their learning on health promotion, students in the year 12 H&HD classes visited the Melbourne Museum’s Road to zero exhibit. Students spent time using a range of highly interactive features, including the virtual reality road trip to zero, with Caden and Hady in the driver’s seat as shown.
Students then went to the Road to zero learning studio where in small groups they designed an effective road safety promotion targeted at 14-17 year olds. Kirra and Claire are shown using the pods provided.
The whole experience provided an excellent to consolidate the following content covered in Unit 3, Area of Study 2:
Students found the experience engaging:
‘It was a great experience to come and learn about health promotion and road safety’ Aymen
‘It was very enjoyable and worth the visit and we learned so much.’ Aliah
"It was the best day ever!" Mackenzie
Semester 1 has seen our students participate in 3 tournaments. We competed and showed great resilience during tough situations and expressed great sportsmanship after well earned victories.
Students have been taking part in both on and off court exercises and are currently working on goal setting and creating good habits. We are looking forward to Semester 2, with more tournaments planned, including our own Academy Cup.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank Coach AJ Magbegor for his work with the Academy. AJ is heading to Washington DC where he will spend the next 4 years with a full basketball scholarship to Howard University, well done!
It was very exciting to see over 200 students attending work experience in Week 8 of this term. Students secured themselves some very interesting placements; one student was off to the Victorian Fisheries Authority, a couple of students went to Somers Camp, Merri-bek Council, Hospitality, Automotive, Hairdressing, Medical Research, Bunurong Land Council and a large number of students went to their local Primary Schools, just to name a few.
Work Experience was an excellent opportunity for students to get a real feel of what it is like to be in the workforce for a whole week in a field they might consider for their future. We received some very positive feedback from both students and employers alike and we had students who were offered jobs to work after school and in the school holidays. What a great outcome.
Thank you to all employers for their support in taking our students this year and providing such an invaluable opportunity.

Bell Primary School grade 5/6 students visited our campus to be Coburg High School Scientists.
Students had a novel experience with year 8 and 9 chs students leading the way.
Students responses:
"Working in a high school science lab was fun!"
"All the science activities were really interesting and I liked doing rotations"
"The student leaders running the science activities were really nice, they answered our questions & helped us when we needed their help"
"It was cool looking at things under the microscopes!"
We look forward to many more collaborations with Bell Primary.
Here we are at the end of another term and yes, there have been even more fun and exciting events in the library as always. So, here we go….
Three of our students were given the incredible opportunity to present an original written piece at The Wheeler Centre’s Reality Bites evening. Alice A, Ada H and Astrid R were provided with a mentorship leading up to the event. On the performance evening, all three took to the stage alongside some of Australia’s most popular Young Adult authors to read aloud their stories. What incredible talent each of our CHS students have! Their talent knows no bounds. It was one of the proudest moments for this librarian indeed.
A massive thanks to Bec Kavanagh from The Wheeler Centre for always supporting our budding authors on their journey to literary greatness. We cannot thank you enough for the support you have given to CHS over the past few years.
Here are a few photos from the night.
It is with much excitement and anticipation when the Library Big Book Sale Fundraiser is announced. It is even more exciting when the day arrives and there is a stampede of book enthusiasts upon the library. Even better that the stampede is so very quiet since everyone is so absorbed in finding their favourites and reading the blurbs on the back covers. Every now and then there is a squeal of delight when a student finds an absolute treasure. So far, we have raised approximately $300. Let’s see how much we raise at the end of the sale. Look below for a few images of our book enthusiasts finding treasure.
Until next term…..

The Respectful Relationship team celebrated Men's Health Week (12-18th of June 2023) by promoting and supporting the physical and mental health and emotional wellbeing of young men and boys in our school community.
Coburg High School partnered with Melbourne Polytechnic Preston campus to facilitate the "Barber & Bants" pop-up salon where students were offered a free haircut by Melbourne Polytechnic students studying hairdressing or barbering. It was a successful hair-raising event where a majority of our students embraced the opportunity to transform "bed head" into a clean buzz, fade or trim bocka (Aussie slang for haircut)! Some students with 5 o'clock shadows requested a clean trim by barbers whilst others had split-ends snipped away for healthy-looking locks. Well done students for giving this a go.
