Plenty Kids heads to TrafficSchool

Wednesday last week our Wallaby and Possum Kinder groups headed to Kew Traffic School. They were able to get on-road experience in a safe learning environment with mini traffic lights, road signs, and even a mini tram! These kinder kids love learning the road rules and road safety and putting their new knowledge into practice! What an exciting day it was for our 4-year-old group, many of whom were on their first excursion ever. Thank you to all the parent helpers who donated their time to help this event run smoothly.

CFA and SES visit Prep

What could be more fun to Prep children than meeting an actual real life super hero?! The children loved getting to see their local CFA firefighters and SES members in action, and learning some important survival skills along the way in these community worker visits! "Get down low and go go go!"  We are so thankful for the kindhearted, and servant minded volunteers of the CFA Doreen and the Whittlesea SES, not only taking time out of their busy schedules to visit Plenty Valley Christian College, but also to dedicate their time to serving their community.

Year 1 Excursion

Last week the Year Ones were filled to the brim with wonder and excitement on their excursion to the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra at Hamer Hall! In awe, the children enjoyed a program called Forces of Nature. The favourite piece was the Flight of the Bumble Bee, the Waltz of the Flowers and the beautiful new work by Brenda Gifford who composed the piece just for this performance. Following this the children then explored the Royal Botanic Gardens; the sensory walk, the fern gully and the Children's Garden.

Japanese Drumming Incursion

Taikoz, from MusicaViva, performed last week for students in Years 4-6 as part of a special music incursion. Students had spent time exploring the music of Japan and pieces they presented in recent Performing Arts lessons, so the students had some prior understanding. It was a very exciting and interactive performance!

Lego Masters InnovationIncursion

Excitement levels were sky-high across primary on Wednesday as Years 1-6 attended an Innovation excursion with Lego Masters (and Grand Masters) contestant and primary school teacher Ryan!

Each year level took part in different interactive team challenges building roof-high Lego towers, vehicles to race down a ramp, hanging builds and a coding buggy for the Year 6’s. There was the opportunity to ask Ryan questions about the show amongst the fun and learning in each session. No doubt a memorable day for all involved!

Inquiry into the Perceptions and Status of VET

This week our Year 10 students began to prepare for their senior schooling by exploring various career options and pathways during the Careers Day and VCE and Pathways Expo.  Our Year 12 students are also preparing to make some important decisions about their post- secondary pathways.

To ensure all our students are making good decisions, they need the skills, knowledge and capabilities to make informed choices about their future studies and how to navigate the world of work.

Recently, our Careers Practitioner, Helen Madden, was invited to be part of the House of Representatives Standing Committee on Employment, Education and Training on the Perceptions and status of Vocational Education and Training (VET). This was part of a parliamentary inquiry into the accessibility of VET information to students and parents and how this impacts the education and training choices of students.

One of the main priorities of the Committee was to improve the perceptions of VET as a valid pathway for students and ensure that both students and parents were provided with access to information about the benefits of a vocational pathway, the value of VET qualifications and the strong employment outcomes.  It is important as students are navigating their way in making these important decisions, that they understand all the options available to them and are supported in making these choices – whatever the pathway.

At PVCC, we are blessed to have a professional careers practitioner of the calibre of Ms Madden who assists us in our commitment to partnering with parents to support students through these important transitions.  We want to ensure that students have the information needed and the opportunity to gain experience, skills and knowledge that will equip them for their future and ready for a world – yet to be imagined.

Ms Madden’s office is in the hub library, so she is accessible to all secondary students.
