Year 1 Unit

Good afternoon Year One families,

It feels like we say this every term, but boy has this term flown by! Thank you for taking the time to meet with us during Parent Teacher Interviews. It has been great to be able to discuss the positive growth and learning we’ve seen with the Year One students.

As the term draws to a close, we have been engaged in all things, ‘dinosaur’! The Year Ones have worked very diligently on their dinosaur information reports, ensuring that their facts match their sub headings and that they have presented their posters neatly. This week, there have been opportunities for the Year Ones to present their poster to the grade as a way to practise their presentation skills.

The Year One students have also enjoyed the chance to create their own clay dinosaur. After discussions around dinosaur features (and how these often differed between carnivores and herbivores) students sketched and then created their own dinosaur. Once they are dry, they will be painted and brought home.

The Year Ones will be bringing some readers home over the holidays. While it’s important for students to rest and recharge during this time, we do ask that you read together and practise the high frequency words as often as you are able.

Here are some ideas for practising some Maths skills over the holidays:

  • Playing any of the games featured in previous newsletter items
  • Skip counting by 10s, 5s and 2s
  • Counting forwards and backwards (from various starting points – not just zero)
  • Quick number knowledge drills e.g. ‘Tell me 1 more that 5, 2 more than 10, etc.’
  • Number based iPad games
  • Practical experiences e.g. sharing out objects, measuring the length of objects, discussing the time, collect and count groups of objects, etc.

We hope all the Year Ones have a lovely break (and parents too if you get the chance) and we look forward to lots of learning in Term Three.
