BUSH PANTRY
Bush Pantry Incursion
Third time lucky, after 2 cancellations of a trip to Screw Creek in Inverloch to work with Lisa Wangman from Bass Coast Landcare due to weather, Lisa came to us and worked with the year 11 Food students.
Lisa acknowledged that she herself is not indigenous but with her work at Landcare has worked with local Bunurong people and has participated in a variety of workshops that has helped her develop her knowledge.
Students tasted a variety of bush foods, she spoke about the Bunurong people and how they had a variety of uses for different plants, like hunting, making baskets, wrapping food and eating.
Students were able to relate it back to what we had been covering in class around the Hunter Gatherer time and the development of various food systems. They were able to hear first hand about the sustainability of the land and waste management by using every part of a plant.
Students made Warrigal Green Pesto (spinach) and Lemon Myrtle Cordial using produce that Lisa had bought in. Lisa also donated to the school a book ‘Growing Australian Native Food Plants in South Gippsland’.
Students found it really interesting and were engaged asking some awesome questions and to top it off really enjoyed the pesto and cordial.
