Languages

Language studies are an integral part of the learning program at Melbourne Girls’ College. The ability to communicate in multiple languages is highly sought after in the workplace, and has the added benefits of improving memory development and ability in your native language.

 

French and Chinese are year-long subjects at year 9, and once enrolled students are expected to complete both semesters. To be eligible to study a language at year 10 and VCE students must complete both semesters of the year 9 course. Students who successfully complete a language in Year 12 may receive bonus points for admission to tertiary institutions.

 

Unit Requirements

 

· Demonstrate comprehension of spoken and written texts by identifying main ideas, responding to instructions and providing personal comment.

· Exchange information in dialogues and role‐plays, and present factual information on a given topic.

· Write short texts to convey information or describe an event or personal experience.

 

Assessment Tasks

 

· Listening and reading comprehension tasks

· Role‐plays and presentations

· Written texts such as brochures, recipes and diary entries

 

Please note: If you elect to study a Language subject it is for a year. This will take up 2 of your 6 electives. Students cannot undertake a Language elective for only 1 semester.

Continuing Chinese (9CSA)

Please note, to enrol in Year 9 Chinese, which is designed for learning Chinese as a second language, that students with a more than basic level of Chinese language or possessing a Chinese background need to discuss their eligibility with their course advisor as well as a teacher of Chinese as part of their subject selection process. 

 

Curriculum Focus

 

The focus for language study in Year 9 Chinese is on developing students’ ability to understand and use Chinese within the world of teenage experience as well as their understanding and appreciation of Chinese culture. Topics include my daily life, birthday celebrations, locations, fashion, shopping in the market, making phone calls, dining at a restaurant and weather.

 

Learning Outcomes

 

On completion of Year 9, students will be able to understand and use Chinese in contexts relevant to personal interest. They will be able to talk about themselves, their daily routine and leisure activities and make choices and decisions in Chinese. They will be able to write informative texts of approximately 180 characters and understand short spoken and written texts related to topics studied.

Continuing French (9FR)

Curriculum Focus

 

Through listening, speaking, reading and writing activities, students will expand their ability to communicate using the French language with a focus on expressing and comparing tastes/ opinions as well as using different tenses. Topics include: Home, Household Tasks, Leisure Activities and Shopping for Food. Through language learning activities students are encouraged to develop an awareness and appreciation of the diversity of francophone cultures. The students interact with various text‐types and media types to explore contemporary culture and language.

 

Learning Outcomes

 

On completion of Year 9, students will be able to understand and use French in contexts relevant to personal interest. They will be able to talk about themselves, their daily routine and leisure activities and role‐play typical situations encountered if they were to travel to a French speaking country. They will be able to write informative texts of approximately 150 words and understand short spoken and written texts related to topics studied.
