Selecting Electives

How Do I Choose?

Step 1  - Self Reflection

In terms of your learning:

  • What are your strengths?
  • What do you enjoy doing?
  • What are the areas that you think you need to improve?
  • What are you interested in studying in the future?

Step 2 - Some Advice

Year 9 is a challenge – lots of new subjects; new electives; new co-curricular activities & new friends to make. It is important that you think of your future—choose what suits you – not what your current friends want to do. This is an opportunity to explore and to think about where you’re heading – make the most of the challenges being offered.

The elective program offers you a wide range of units. You will undertake three elective units each semester in Year 9. Choose units which sound interesting to you – they are aimed at expanding your horizons in areas which you already enjoy, or you may choose units which offer something entirely new and exciting for you to explore.

Read the Year 9 Handbook carefully for unit descriptions. Each unit lasts for one semester only and cannot be repeated. Discuss your options with teachers and parents – ask if you’re not sure!

NB: To be able to do VCE French or Chinese, you must complete the relevant language studies in both semesters 1 & 2 in Year 9 and Year 10.
