Maths Electives

Are you creative? Do you enjoy puzzles and challenges? Do you want to know why and how, rather than just being told what to do? Then Year 9 LEAP maybe for you!

Year 9 Learning Extension and Advancement Program  (LEAP)

Curriculum Focus

LEAP is a mathematics enrichment program that is a continuation of the Year 7 and 8 LEAP programs. This unit is designed for students who enjoy Mathematics and want to experience mathematical concepts outside of the normal curriculum. Students will have the opportunity to study diverse areas of maths such as algebra, geometry, methods of proof, number theory and number bases. There is a strong focus on developing problem solving skills and higher order thinking. It provides students with an ability and passion for mathematics and an opportunity to explore a range of strategies to solve challenging mathematical concepts and problems. Students work individually and collaboratively on challenging tasks. Students are expected to participate in competitions such as the Australian Mathematics Enrichment Program and the Australian Mathematics Competition.

Learning Outcomes

Students will learn how to critically analyse problems and select and use appropriate strategies to solve tasks.  Students will work both individually and collaboratively to explain and present their solutions and solution processes in written and oral form.

  • Students who have studied LEAP in Year 8 are able to select LEAP as an elective in Year 9.
  • Students who have not participated in the Year 8 LEAP Program will need to seek approval from their Maths teacher and the Maths Domain Leader to undertake this course.

There is a cost associated with the program of $60.00 per year.**
