Principal's Welcome

We are delighted to continue our work together or to welcome you to the college.  As a community we have a commitment to personal best in learning and wellbeing, both are foundations for future success beyond the gates of Melbourne Girls’ College. The achievements of M.G.C. are certainly in academic results but a broader definition of success ensures personal, social, emotional, sporting, and artistic success are central to experiences at the College.

The school community takes pride in teaching ethical understandings to ensure our students gain a sense of stewardship for the future and for being a positive influence on others. The College has a focus on building a professional community with a specific learning framework. This knowledge centres on research-based best practices in education and wellbeing initiatives to ensure students become leaders of learning alongside their teachers.

Our curriculum evolves and develops with each stage of learning across the Year Levels. At Year 9 the emphasis is on deeper learning in both traditional disciplines and trans-disciplinary subjects such as World of Ideas. This innovative subject combines English, History and aspects of the social sciences to build an engaging future-oriented learning experience. The skills in collaboration, problem-solving, and confidence building are embedded in each program.

School performance for a young person in Year nine is about discovering what they can do, and what they would like to do and for us it means helping them to create that pathway.  Students are going to be exposed to new experiences in year 9; new electives, supported transition into senior school, subject selections and for many VCE and VET subjects, planning for work experience and let’s not forget NAPLAN.   These are all very important elements to our Year 9 program, and it would be remiss of me not to acknowledge that success in these areas will open doors and pathways.

But I would like to add that school experience for a young person in Year 9 is more than that. It is about knowing themselves, imagining the person they would like to grow into, testing the waters and establishing their own identity.  If that looks like, impressive NAPLAN results, perfect exam scores, multiple awards, and a wonderful report, we will celebrate that.  But, if it is about the value of building positive quality relationships, knowing the truth of right and wrong, and having an unqualified belief in the inherent goodness of each person, then MGC is on the right track to providing an education that celebrates depth, breadth, and the whole person.  That is something we will be very proud of.

We look forward to working with you in 2023 and continuing to follow your child’s success at Melbourne Girls’ College.
