Threads of our past unfolding into our future ...
The Australian Children’s Laureate for 2018-1019 is the well-known author Maurice Gleitzman.
The role of the Laureate is to “promote the importance of reading, creativity and story in the lives of young Australians.”
With 20 titles by this author in our library, across the sections General, Secondary and Senior Fiction, there is ample opportunity for students to borrow and read one of his books. Two of them, Once and Boy Overboard, are studied in English as class novels.
Children’s Laureate programs have been implemented in a number of countries and play a significant role in celebrating stories and their importance in all our lives. Stories hold the threads of our past and unfold into our futures.
We hope that our families not only encourage their children to read stories but take the time to share them by reading together and discussing them. Telling stories and listening to each other’s stories is a wonderful way to keep family events alive and remembered into the future.
Lunch time activities are still a popular aspect of our library’s function. Our offering for those who enjoy colouring in has been boosted with a new range of sheets providing simple or challenging pictures. Pencils, crayons and rubbing plates are provided in the library and Mrs Fergusson will supervise these activities in the first half of Tuesday and Friday lunchtimes.
Finally, I’d like to congratulate Isabelle who brought her own yarn, then designed and wove the buttoned neck-warmer she’s wearing in the picture. Well done, Isabelle.
