Year 10 Food Explore

The Year 10 Explore Food class has begun the year by looking at reducing food waste within the household. They have investigated a variety of different food waste methods with a particular focus on food preservation. The students have looked at how to maintain the sensory properties of fresh foods and were able to identify chilling and freezing, bottling, drying, salting and the use of sugar as the best methods of preserving food.

The class have spent multiple lessons researching and analysing preserved foods and have done sensory, nutritional and cost analyses on fresh verses preserved foods.  They have put preservation techniques in to practice by making their own chutneys, bottled fruits, pickled vegetables and fruit leathers. The students also made a variety of fruit jams using their understanding of sugar as both a setting and preserving agent.

The students have been introduced to foods they have never seen before and it has been wonderful seeing their sense of pride and achievement as they have learnt new techniques, created new dishes and have a better understanding of how they can reduce food waste.
