Clyde North Campus News

Pastoral Care at St. Peter’s embraces more than the giving of well prepared, thought provoking and stimulating lessons.

After a number of whole school and campus events we finally settled into our first Pastoral Period for the term. Avila, Assisi, Glowrey and Kolbe hosted a fantastic, fun-filled round of active competitions including; Basketball, Dodge ball, Soccer and Hula Hoops!

As Houses rotated through each activity the competition became more active and skilful. A sense of humour and good sportsmanship were very much on display as House Leaders and Captains supported all participants. Participation is critical to the development of House Spirit, as was evident at last week’s Swimming Carnival which saw Augustine (overall champions) and Romero (House Spirit winners) Houses demonstrate. Here is just some of the feedback from students about today’s pastoral activities period.

I though it was tonnes of fun!!!  I loved the Dodgeball the best. - Samantha Garnett (Yr 11 Avila)

I thought everyone had fun today at the dodgeball. - Hasrat Gill (Yr 8 Kolbe)

Pretty Fun - need more time because not everyone got to a have a turn/multiple turns so a double lesson would equal more participation. - Toby Durbin (Avila)

The activities were great except that you were lucky if you got to a have a 30 second turn.  We need more time to increase participation. - Mia Sibilia (Yr 8 MacKillop)

I think that that others had fun but I didn't get to have a turn because the lines were so long. - Mandolo Habibo (Yr 11 Kolbe)

Today's House activities were so much fun.  My favourite was the Hula Hoop challenge as it was really unique - Poorab Bhavsar (Yr 8 Assisi)

Based firmly on Gospel values, we dedicate ourselves to the comprehensive pastoral care of students and staff.

The fortnightly pastoral period allows us to concentrate on developing the whole child.  Through a variety of activities and programs meticulously designed to meet the needs of our students we are able to raise the standard of pastoral care provided at the College. The Strive & Thrive program guides much of what we do and plan for during these sessions. Experts are employed throughout the year to present special sessions addressing specific issues facing young people today, such as cyber-bullying, Safe-partying, and Road safety. Information is powerful but it is far more potent when presented with relevance to the lives of our young people here at St Peters College.

Your Child’s Learning Advisor plays a critical role in developing and running programs aimed at supporting the development of positive relationships, assertiveness and conflict resolution. The Learning Advisor and House Leader become critical to psychological, social and emotional development of our students. Pastoral periods provide a wonderful opportunity for students to get to know their House Leaders and Learning Advisors in this critical role. Positive relationships need time to develop as they must be built on trust. Fundamental to the success of our pastoral program is the variety of activities that build a secure platform on which trust can be established.

Pastoral care is a key component of the upcoming year 7 camp. Many year 7 parents may be getting a little nervous as the camp departure date nears, in fact they leave next week. The camp provides a wonderful opportunity for students to move beyond their comfort zone yet still secure in the familiarity of the year 7 teaching staff, and the new friends they have made. The Peer Support Program has also begun, supporting year 7 students with greater knowledge of their peers, staff and the environment which they now call, their school.  Pastoral care is not just a lesson or one period, it is a whole experience that is maintained throughout a student’s entire time at St Peters College.

Please ask your son/daughter about the pastoral period they experienced this week, and be sure to check in with them as the term and year progresses. Hopefully your interest will inspire our young people to engage in meaningful conversations about the issues explored in pastoral activities and programs.
