Justice across our Ministries - Brigidine College Indooroopilly

Justice

We asked Brigidine College Indooroopilly to describe how they have given expression to the theme of Justice - the Kildare Ministries Value for 2020.

Brigidine College Indooroopilly has embraced the 2020 theme of Justice by implementing the Living Justice charter.  We commenced the year with our Staff Spirituality Day inviting Kildare Ministries representatives, Renee Oberin and Erica Pegorer, to unpack the charter.  Erica presented the story of Kildare Ministries and how the community had arrived at the development of the charter through lengthy, wide-ranging consultations.  Renee invited us to explore ways we might embrace the Justice Charter personally, within departments and the broader College community, using stories and scripture.

Within the classroom setting, Assistant Principal Teaching and Learning Allison Johansen has invited teaching staff to embed Catholic Social Teaching into goal setting for the year and asked them to report back on their engagement.  Our Middle Leaders will explore the dynamics of the charter; celebrating what we are doing well and exploring ways teachers might further engage in these educational opportunities.  Presently, Brigidine College Indooroopilly is forming a more concise Catholic Social Teaching document that will be sent to all staff to implement in their classrooms.

Caritas Project Compassion invited students to participate in Caritas for Ks to explore the struggles children and women have in traveling long, dangerous distances to collect water and, at times, forgo their education and other duties.

The Share the Dignity Campaign was another opportunity for students and staff to support women and teenagers trapped in the cycle of period poverty either through domestic violence, mental health or a lack of a safe home environment.

Staff members, Rebecca Reis and Claudia Mathews have instigated a Pay it Forward meal plan for staff to contribute to during this COVID-19 time, to support families that may be struggling financially due to wage restrictions or job losses.
