Grade Five

Grade 5 Report
Term 4 certainly promised to be a busy one and it has not disappointed us; we still have much to do in the few weeks left in our school year! It is hard to believe that our Grade 5 students are not far away from not only being Grade 6 students, but also the future leaders of our school.
Our recent ‘Oatlands on Broadway’ dance production was outstanding! The Grade 5 dances were simply brilliant and, we believe, stole the show! Full credit goes to our stunning dancers and many thanks to our Grade 5 parents for ensuring their children looked amazing on both days. We really hope that you took the opportunity to visit our Art Show and see the spectacular display of all of students’ art work. Full credit not only goes to the talent of our students as a collective, but also the incredible vision of our very talented Art teachers, Mrs Derfi and Mrs Shave.
Upcoming events: Bike Education and Fete in Week 10, along with our Movie Excursion in Week 11. Please keep an eye on Compass for any updates.
Term 4 Literacy continues to use The Writer’s Notebook to develop strong, meaningful messages within the students’ independent writing, where students select the text type that will best get the message across to their audience. Spelling remains a priority also, using the SMART Spelling analysis of our weekly words to reinforce essential spelling skills and also enabling students to transfer these skills into both the writing and reading processes.
We have focused our Maths teaching on Statistics and Probability, Shape, the Four Processes, Fractions and Decimals throughout Term 4. Students have posed questions enabling them to collect, represent and analyse their data. Exploring the features of both 2D and 3D shapes, along with symmetry and transformations allowed students to reinforce their understanding and ability to apply their knowledge to create 3D shapes both manually and digitally.
The focus of our Creativity Integrated topic has been inventions and innovations. Students have explored the SCAMPER Model to learn how existing inventions have been modified and applying elements of the model to modifying other inventions in order to make life easier. Our students have explored using Tinkercad to create digital 3D models of their innovations. Furthering our students research skills throughout this unit has remained an important focus, along with the importance of summarising and presenting information in their own words.
We remain incredibly grateful for the many opportunities our students have been given while attending their Specialist classes throughout 2019. Our students have had the benefit of learning and reinforcing so many skills that will continue to enhance and develop their learning beyond 2019.
Our heartfelt thanks to you all for your support throughout the 2019 school year; it has been an incredible journey! We wish you all a very happy, safe and relaxing time over the holidays.
