Literacy
Alison Lester is the author we are studying for writing and reading at the moment. We have used the
6+1 Traits of Writing to analyse Alison Lester’s writing style and looked closely at a sentence from her book Magic Beach. We have looked at bracketing commas, adjectives, nouns and verbs from this sentence, discussed why Alison Lester has used these and had a go at using them in our own writing. Students have created some wonderful sentences using the same structure as Alison Lester.
Students have also looked at various Alison Lester books in reading to complete different reading tasks. These tasks include researching about Alison Lester, discussing themes and characters from her books, looking at the story structure and making connections from her books. As well as looking at Alison Lester books, students have also been working on their new roles in their book groups. These roles are questions maker, summariser, vocab enricher and travel tracer.
Numeracy
Multiplication has been our main focus this term. Students have been engaged in learning their times tables with some students already being able to tick off their maths goal to learn a certain times table. We have also learnt about solving multiplication problems using strategies such as “groups of”, arrays, repeated addition and algorithms. We have just started looking at mass by using balancing scales. We will continue to explore this concept over the next 2 weeks.
Inquiry
Our inquiry topic this term has been very student driven with students choosing their own topics and questions to research. Most students have really enjoyed this subject and are thinking of fun and creative ways to present their information. We look forward to seeing their ideas in the next couple of weeks.
Pet Care
On Thursday last week we had a visit from Basil and his owner to teach us all about how to care for our pets and what to do when we are approached by a strange dog.
