Kilometre Club is Back!

This non-competitive club will be starting soon.

When: Every morning starting Wednesday, May 29th and ending Friday, June 14th

***please note Friday, June 7th is a PA day so no Kilometre Club**

Time: 7:50 a.m to 8:30 a.m.

Where: Northlea School Track

What to do? Collect one charm for your bracelet daily. Each child will walk/run around the track to collect one popsicle stick for each lap they complete. Popsicle sticks will then be traded in for a charm. This year each grade will have a province, student volunteers will be “Provincial Leaders” who will go around the track with their grade. We are celebrating Kilometre Club’s 10th anniversary!!

Attendance: Participate as many mornings as you can and try to win a pizza lunch for your class! Again this year, let the attendance table know how many popsicle sticks you have so we can convert them into metres and see how far we can “run/walk across “ CANADA”! (1 Popsicle stick is approx. 200 metres)

Cost: Free - Thanks to Home and School funding!

Why Participate: To promote fitness, well-being and have fun!

Please note that parents/guardians of the child(ren) participating must stay or make arrangements with another parent to supervise the participants.

If you have any questions/concerns, please contact Claudine (Claude) Lukawesky: davidclaude@sympatico.ca

If it is raining there is NO Kilometre Club for that day

(Check the school Twitter account https://twitter.com/NorthleaTDSB that morning.)

EQAO

We enjoyed meeting with those who were able to join our Parent Information Session.

Northlea's writing dates are:

Grade 3 English:  May 22, 23, 24, 27 & 28

Grade 3 French: May 22, 23

Grade 6: May 28, 29, 30, 31 and June 3

Please make every effort to ensure that students are present and arrive on time for these dates.  On the home front, we encourage a good night's rest prior to writing, a nourishing breakfast and an optimistic stance about the experience.  At school we are presenting EQAO as an opportunity for them to celebrate what they know how to do and also show us which areas we should focus on to support student learning in the upcoming years.

Parent Discussion - Intensive Support Program for Students with Developmental Disabilities

We invite parents of students who are in our Intensive Support Program to join us for a discussion on Thursday, June 13th at 9:10 am.  We welcome parent ideas, reflections and questions as valuable input.

Proposed Boundary Change Public Meeting

Below please find an excerpt from a Public Meeting Notice.  You can read the full letter which includes more information in the following PDF:

As you may be aware, development in the Yonge-Eglinton area continues to grow at an accelerated pace, resulting in accommodation pressures at local schools, particularly at Eglinton Jr PS. Staff have completed a number of reviews to look at accommodation solutions in this area and will continue to do so when Phase 2 of the Yonge-Eglinton Program Area Review resumes in the fall of 2019. In the meantime, to provide a short-term accommodation solution for Eglinton Jr PS, the Toronto District School Board would like to invite you to a public meeting to discuss proposed boundary changes involving three area schools:

 Eglinton Junior Public School

 Hodgson Middle School

 Northlea Elementary & Middle School

The meeting will be held at Northlea Elementary & Middle School (south gymnasium), located at 305 Rumsey Road, on Thursday, May 23, 2019 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

The proposed boundary changes involve the redirection of the portions of the Eglinton Jr PS and Hodgson MS junior and intermediate attendance areas located east of Cardiff Road, north of Eglinton Avenue East, and west of Bayview Avenue to Northlea E & MS (see next page). A Boundary Review has been established to analyze this option and consult with the affected school communities before a final decision is made.

We Walk for Water

Thank you to our wonderful WE Team for raising awareness about access to clean water.  We were proud to host a Water Walk.

Artist in Residence - Parent Session

We invite all interested parents to join in a special parent session with our Artist In Residence - Pria Muzumdar on Tuesday, June 4th at 9:00 am.  Pria has been working with students in Grades 3-6 on the "Stories in Stripes" project.  During their time with Pria they have been exploring the qualities of innnovators and changemakers and representing those qualities visually with stripes.

To the left, the students used stripes to represent shades, nuances, progress, shape-shifting, colour-changing & the design process. To the right, they used stripes to represent compromise, adapting, flexibility, teamwork, fusion, changes, creativity, design process, mixing!

Class Placements

Our class placement process for the 2019-2020 school year is underway.  Thank you to everyone who shared input.  We received hundreds of submissions.  For those who emailed feedback after the form closed, the administrative team will endeavour to incorporate any additional input we recieved via email; however,  we do ask that you also please update the classroom teacher.  At the same time, we have concluded accepting any additional input because our placement meetings with staff members are now in process.  We respecfully reiterate that we are not accepting requests for grade compositions (ie. straight,  combined, the upper of a combined grade or the lower of a combined grade).  The provincial model includes combined grades and straight grades.  All of these classroom settings are considered appropriate settings.

Walk & Roll to School Wednesdays

We have been so proud of everyone joining in on our Walk and Roll to School Wednesdays.

Ultimate Frisbee: Both the Grade 6 & 8 Frisbee teams have been the embodiment of team spirit and have been working hard to develop some great plays. They're readying their cuts, flicks, back-hands and hucks for their upcoming tournaments this week. Here is the schedule for the Grade 6 & 8 tournaments:

Track and Field: Our Area Qualifier meet was a huge success. It started off a little dicey with the weather and some traffic issues but it ended with a great deal of pride and hard work from our student athletes. Northlea was very well represented and ended up having 70 events (individual events/relays) qualify for the Conference Championship on May 31st at Esther Shiner. Amazing job Northlea! The following is a link to the Northlea Track and Field website: https://sites.google.com/tdsb.on.ca/northleatrackandfield2019/home

Flag Rugby:  The students have been preparing this year and the Rugby season is finally here. They will be banding together as a strong Northlea squad next Monday, May 27th.

Go Northlea!

Please join Rachel at an upcoming coffee morning.  These "coffee" events are informal gatherings where parents and constituents are invited for a roundtable-style discussion of information sharing, best practices and interesting conversation related to education in our ward. Often superintendents and sometimes even principals drop by, so these are fun and engaging events. We hope you will attend!

Mark your calendars for the last Ward 11 coffee meeting of the year! Join me in the upstairs kitchen at Longo’s, June 12, 9:15-12:00, for public education-related conversation, lunch included. We will be talking about the proposed budget, ward 11 schools and much, much more.
