ARTS MATTERS

YEAR 9 ART EXCURSION

On Friday 11 October, the Year 9 Art class went to the NGVI to view the Surrealist art works and complete a Photography task in the city.

We saw artworks by famous artists that we had studied in class, including Salvador Dali, Rene Magritte and Max Ernst. Many of us were surprised by how small the artworks were in reality. We also viewed the Chinese Photography exhibition and made connections with how Surrealism had influenced these contemporary photographers.

We hope you come to see our photos that we took on this excursion, in the Arts Show on Thursday 7 November.

YEAR 10 CERAMICS EXCURSION

On Thursday 10 October, Ms Kuriata and the Semester 2 Year 10 Ceramics class went to the NGVI to look at the Ceramics collection and the Terracotta Warrior and Cai Guo-Qiang exhibition.

We saw incredibly old ceramic vessels that had somehow survived to the present day. The foyer at the NGV had an incredible, thought provoking Pop Art sculpture by Kaws. We listened to a very informative lecture on the Terracotta Warriors from China and were overwhelmed by an installation by Cai Guo-Qiang which was of an enormous flock of 10,000 porcelain starlings swarming overhead. He also creates artworks using dynamite, by exploding colour over them.

We saw lots of really cool teapots which is the task we are currently working on. We hope you come to see our teapots in the Art Show in November, later this year.

YEAR 10 ART EXCURSION TO THE AUSTRALIAN CENTRE FOR CONTEMPORARY ARTS

On Wednesday 9 October the Year 10 art class went to explore the different types of art that were found around the City of Melbourne.

The first place we went to was the Melbourne Art Centre. Then, we went to the Australia Centre of Contemporary arts (ACCA), a gallery of artworks created by contemporary artists. There, we learnt the ‘art’ of sound. This gallery was a place full of sound. The sound of water, the sound of insects, the sounds of instruments and the sound of people. There were different areas for different artworks, some having high ceilings, some having low ceilings, some painted completely black and some painted completely white. Out of all the artworks that we saw at ACCA our class enjoyed ‘the Psychology of Sound Forum’ the most. It was a very interesting piece of art, as the loud music and bright lights that formed a star shined. This artwork remained in our minds even after leaving the gallery.

We also went into ‘Buxton Contemporary’, another art gallery. This place had two floors. On the first floor there were hand-made costumes that were created from rare Bauhaus archival material for a public event. They weren’t things you would wear or see on a daily basis but they were all very colourful and exotic looking. There was also a colourful mannequin that was in an odd pose, a pile of dirt with nature growing on them, large blocks that were all in different sizes and a lot of ‘things’ written on the walls. The first floor of this gallery was very different to other galleries that we have been to before, which made it more interesting for us. The second floor had paintings, puzzles, objects made from recyclable products, artworks made from wool and and an odd looking instrument. We had a very interesting and enjoyable time in this gallery.

After having a lunch break we headed to the ‘Campbell Arcade’. An underground gallery. Each artwork made from an individual, a normal person just like us created. It was a very nice place to take photos. After that we went to the ‘Hosier lane’ and the ‘ACDC lane’. We took many photos of the graffiti art that were found almost everywhere on the walls. There were so many artworks that looked amazing. We walked around looking around, finding little details of art on the walls and overall had a great time.

The excursion itself was very enjoyable but the best thing about this excursion was that the fact that we were given the freedom to walk around ourselves.
