HEALTH AND PE WEEK

In a celebration of Health and PE week the best junior and senior students (and Mr Foot) competed in the beep test (20m shuttle run) challenge at lunchtime to determine who will be the beep test champion. Darcy Hayes from 7L ran a very impressive 10.8 taking out the beep test championship for the Year 7s.

The Year 8s had some very strong runners and competitors, Kevin Zhou ran an 11.4 beep but it wasn't quite enough with Daniel Shpak taking it out for the Year 8 Boys with a very impressive beep of 11.6. For the Year 8 Girls Caitlin Lyon ran an amazing 11.4 finishing second to Annabelle Sakurai with an unbelievable beep of 12.4 and breaking the old beep test record held by Genevieve O’Brien since 2015.

There were also some very strong results for the Year 9s and 10s with Katelyn Chan winning the Year 9 Girls beep test challenge with a score of 9.6 and Victoria Poulos winning the Year 10 Girls with a score of 10.3.

Matt Day and Matt O’Brien showed their impressive running ability both winning their respective year levels. Matt Day from 9A with a score of 13.2 and Matt O’Brien from 10I pushing Mr Foot with an unreal score of 14.1.

Star veterans Ben Howells and Jason Clayton both ran a 13.2 beep which was extremely impressive considering they ran with no shoes, in school uniform and were giving each other piggy backs in the opening levels. Chisholm House Captain, Jason Clayton explained while huffing and puffing after the test “It is very important to stay fit and healthy and it has been a great way to distract him from the stress of exams coming up.Jason also wished to express that a beep test is much more fun with shoes on.

Other activities conducted during Health and PE week included a staff v student volleyball game, a gym circuit for students and a healthy snack party. Thank you to all the staff for giving up their own time to run these activities for students.

MCKINNON RUNNING CLUB

Every Tuesday and Thursday morning at 7:30 am during the week, McKinnon Running Club is a great way to start the day running around McKinnon Reserve. After Health and PE week, more students have been coming but even more students and teachers are welcome.

Together with Ms Carter, Mr Hudd and Ms Mauger, students get to meet at the front of the hall in the morning and get to run with other people who have similar interests. Every morning, students and teachers get to choose the ‘exercises’, warm-ups and main sets, which are different every time so you never get bored with the program. There are various things we do and even in inclement weather, everyone comes up with a running set to do on the footpath rather than the oval or even indoors.

Participating in Running Club doesn’t only improve your relationships and interactions with different people, but your overall fitness and speed of running improve as well. The more you push yourself in the sprint sets, the more benefits you get out of it and you feel more refreshed for school, ready to sit down and focus for the school day.

Running Club is a wonderful way to feel healthier, learn from others and have an enjoyable experience before school. Although everyone is at varying fitness levels, no matter the pace of your running, overall fitness, and whether you know anyone at the club, the experience of your fitness improves and you get to know more people. All are welcome to come and participate as generally the sets are done in time slots rather than a certain distance so each individual covers different distances. Bring your friends and have some fun at Running Club on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. I hope that anyone who is aspiring to improve their overall fitness and running skills should come and enjoy Running Club before school. As a persistent runner once said, “a one hour run is 4% of your day, no excuses”.

YEAR 7 CRICKET

SMR Quarter Final d Koo Wee Rup

On Wednesday 16 October, the Year 7 Boys Cricket team went to Langwarrin to play Koo Wee Rup in the SMR Quarter Final. Senin Seymour won the toss and elected to bat. He opened the batting with Sahil Shaik and then got the team off to a nice start. After a few quick wickets and Sahil retiring after 20 balls, Nick Harper came to the crease and got a quick fire 33 to get the team to 143. Koo Wee Rup’s openers fell quickly to Farhan Hussain and they couldn’t come back from it. Koo Wee Rup couldn’t get within 30 runs of the set total and the team moved on to the SMR Semi Final.

SMR Semi Final d Cheltenham 168 to 110

On Thursday 24 October, the team went to Caulfield Park to play in the SMR semi and, if they win the first game, the final. Senin won the toss against Cheltenham and elected to bat first. Senin again opened with Sahil and they got the team off to a flyer. Senin retired after 20 balls on 27 and Nick retired on 35 off his 20 balls. After some great team batting the final score was 168. Wickets were spread throughout all the bowlers as Cheltenham were kept to 110 meaning that the team would move on to the final.

SMR Final Lost to Frankston 138 to 142

In the second game of the day, Senin again won the toss and elected to bat. Frankston had some quality bowlers but Senin started nicely making 27 off his 20 balls. A cluster of wickets brought Krishna Sridhar and Rajit Kalra to the wicket. These boys steadied the ship and both batted out their 20 balls each. At the end of the innings Senin was able to come back in and add another quick fire 15, including a massive six, to his total. This bought the score to 138. The bowlers bowled some good line and length but Frankston had some class batsmen that got off to a good start. Some middle over bowling kept the game close with 3 needed from Frankston off the last over. Senin to the task of bowling the last but unfortunately their star batsmen hit a six just over the top of long on to win the game. The boys should keep their heads high as they put in a stellar effort. Bad luck but they’ll be back next year to win it all.
