Nasi Tumpeng by Year 9 Indonesian students

Indonesian class took a drastic turn when we turned up to class on Wednesday

afternoon 28 October, we were greeted by Ibu Schokman and an arrangement of Indonesian dishes on a VERY heavy platter.

We have been learning about food, specifically Indonesian food. We were lucky enough to enjoy a true Indonesian dish that is usually used for celebrations.

We tried an Indonesian dish called Nasi Tumpeng, translated in English to corn shaped yellow rice. It was presented beautifully on a large, round dish and looked like a work of art. It consisted of ayam goreng (fried chicken), nasi kuning (yellow rice), rendang sapi (beef rendang), urap (mixed vegetables with shredded coconut), kentang goreng manis (sweet potato fries), kentang goreng pedas (spicy fried potatoes), mi goreng (fried noodles), jagung goreng tepung (corn and vegetable frita), and a very spicy dressing to go on top. On top of that that was a ‘sambal pedas sekali’, meaning ‘really hot chillies’. We were also given Indonesian ginger tea.

What did the students think about the Nasi Tumpeng?

Bella-Rose :

The food tasted a lot better than initially thought and some had a surprising spiciness.

Charlotte:

I really enjoyed the vegetable fritter, but it is hard to choose a favourite as it was all very good. I think Nasi Tumpeng is something I will incorporate into more of my meals especially for celebrations when they are usually eaten and I will enjoy eating it in the future.

Abigail:

There was such a wide variety of cultural food. It was sweet and spicy and above all delicious. My favourite would’ve been the fried noodles and the prawn crackers. It made me truly feel like I was at an Indonesia celebration, I would 100% have it again. Indonesia has such a rich culture and it is definitely expressed in their food.
