Peterborough Baller’s Switch Codes to Volley

The familiar shouts of “mine” and “yours,” and the less familiar “spike” were heard at the Vineyard Lutheran School by Peterborough players during a volleyball tournament last week.

Two combined year 8/9 teams, a girls and boys, were entered into the competition to compete against two Clare High School teams, Burra Community School, and Harvest Christian College.

The girls' team was quite competitive, beating the first Clare team convincingly and the Harvest team in an evenly skilled match.

Unfortunately, they were beaten heaily in the third, losing all sets against the second Clare team and then lost against Burra, where they won the last set.

The boys' team was less successful and were competing against teams with taller and more physically mature players; Brandon said it all when commenting on his opponents: “but he’s got a beard!”

That’s not to say the boys' team did not have its moments. The boys' team had moments and passages of good play, and when playing collectively, looked very competitive. Even though losing all games, the boys were unlucky to lose a couple sets which could have gone one way or the other, and so only missed out on two games by a few points here and there. However, they soon lost their touch when dropping their heads after losing a few points in a row.

Perhaps the boys learnt the trick: when the team kept their composure and displayed positive body language they were successful.

Throughout the day students learnt the importance of working as a team, positive talk, and to continue competing when it gets tough.

On Wednesday the 28th of October we had the privilege of having Dave and Alan come to our school from Rugby Schools Australia to teach us all the basic skills of rugby, and how the game works.

Throughout the day, students learnt the different strategies of attacking and defending.

Having this opportunity prepared us for our MNSEC carnival on the 29th of October.

Overall, this was a great experience for our school!!
