Outdoor Education

The Outdoor Education classes have been busy since returning to onsite classes with a more 'practical approach' to Outdoor Education.

Watching YouTube clips on 'how to put up a tent' is not quite the same as putting it up in real life! The key points they have learnt are:

  • Tent location and ensuring a flat surface
  • Peg the sides diagonally opposite to each other first, on a 45 degree angle
  • The Tent Fly is secured to the tent with the velcro straps and pulled tight.
  • All bags are to be placed inside the tent so they don’t blow away.
  • Fold up the tent so that it fits perfectly in the bag
  • Don’t leave any pegs in the ground!

The girls did a great job at putting the tents up but many needed a second go at packing the tent away.

The students have also had a practical lesson on the parts to the trangia stove and how to safely boil water.

They managed to cook a meal, boil water for noodles, warm up some pikelets or  reheat some food on their trangia during their second lesson. Once again they were able to understand the role of the 'lid adjuster' to decrease the temperature when cooking, so that their food didn’t burn and also to use the lid to cover the top of the trangia to increase the speed of the water boiling.

Cleaning the trangia is extremely important to ensure that it is ready for the next group that uses it.
